Prehistoric Biology Atlas 334 – The Far Horned Rhinoceros

Name: Far-horned rhinoceros

Age: Mid-Miocene to Late Miocene

Location: North America (Nebraska, USA)

Size: Length 4 meters

Like amphibian rhinoceros, rhinoceros have evolved the hippotamus shape, and the far-horned rhinoceros is a typical representative. Its torso is long and burly, its legs are short and thick, and it sometimes even drags its torso to the ground. Its legs are likely to be used to walk underwater, rather than on land.

The biggest difference between this extraordinary creature and the modern hippopotamus is the conical horn on the nose. This feature may only be possessed by males and used for defense or display.
