Paleo biodiversity: Eastern Yunnan Alpine Pick-up

"Bazi" is the category of "small and medium-sized basins in the mountains" in Yunnan, including a variety of small landform types of different origins. Qujing, Yunnan is composed of 8 dams, which were oceans hundreds of millions of years ago. Stratigraphic uplift, sea water retreat, vicissitudes of the sea, The Kuo Mountain, Longhai Mountain and the surrounding areas have exposed many marine life fossils, especially the most brachiopod shell fossils, mainly distributed 425 million to tens of millions of years of Silurian, Devonian, Permian and Cenozoic brachiopod fossils, widely distributed, numerous, as many as hundreds of species. Tongue-shaped shellfish, five-room shellfish, small round shellfish, priest shellfish, orthographic shellfish, New Moon shellfish, long-body shellfish, small-billed shellfish, caveless shellfish, stone swallow shellfish, perforated shellfish, Qujing imitation caveless shellfish, Qujing Hao's stone swallow, Hongmiao ancient windowless shellfish, Yunnan ancient quasi windowless shellfish, Yunnan small snail shellfish, Liao Jiao (small silhouette) clam, Qujing clam and other brachiopods and Qujing foam coral, Qujing middle nest coral, Xiaoxiang flute tube coral, Qujing pen net moss moss, Cuifeng mountain nodule stone is spread throughout the mountains of Damzi.

Ancient biodiversity geological landforms, Qujing people have produced a special and elegant way of leisure and entertainment - hiking to the edge of the dam between the mountains to pick up shell fossils. The low-key "two tones" Lao Li is such a lover, he has used this way to pass the time for many years, bringing himself a lot of fun. Where to go on a hot summer day? There is a beautiful scenery at the edge of Qujing Dam, so let's go with Old Li to the edge of Qujing Dam to take a walk and see this beautiful landscape.

In Qujing, there are many places that can be used as the edge of the dam to see the scenery, and Zhanyi Taoyuan Village is one of them. Taoyuan Village is about 20 kilometers away from Qujing, which is a small remote village with no direct buses. To get to Taoyuan Village, you can walk from the direction of Zhu Street, reach the bridge of Zhu Street, and then follow the "Zhuan" Highway along the direction of the Nanpan River, and travel north for more than 10 kilometers. On both sides of the river are new green poplar trees, and from time to time swim out of the river, which is a duck-like water bird, which is called "water hyacinth" by locals, and they feed on small fish, shrimp and insects. When they saw someone, they quickly plunged into the water and disappeared. Birdsong from time to time between the poplar trees, it is very amazing to be able to see the old bird and the magpie, two birds that have not been seen for many years, they actually inhabit a branch together, coexisting peacefully, one joy and one sad, the contrast is great, which is very inexplicable. The banks of the Nanpan River are full of life, and the green seedlings are thriving. In the field, from time to time, white storks and herons fly up and fall, and the monotonous fields are embellished with vivid colors.

Follow a branch of the Nanpan River upstream, and soon you will reach the edge of Taoyuan Village, where Qilin District and Zhanyi meet. Taoyuan, a beautiful name, the village is naturally also very beautiful. Wash your face with a bunch of water in the creek on the edge of the village, so that you can cool down. On both sides of the stream are farmland, about a meter or so below the farmland, but it is a standard smooth pebble, and it is certain that under these fields must have been a river with wide waves of water many years ago.

A villager sitting on a field mound who was taking a nap saw us and naturally took the initiative to ask, "Are you here to pick up the 'hugging hens'?" Seeing our surprised eyes, he pointed at it and continued: "'Holding hens' has a lot of backings, students are on vacation, they know, they can find them to lead the way." ”

The so-called "hugging hen" originally referred to a coleoptera insect called "water turtle worm", and what the villagers called "hugging hen" is actually a shellfish fossil in the Silurian strata. From the first time I came here under the guidance of a teacher in my 10s, the time is hurried, and more than 30 years have passed in the blink of an eye, and I can't remember how many times I have been here.

I asked, "Are there more 'hens hugging' now?" ”

The villager replied: "There is not much in the past now, a few years ago, there were many people who came to engage in geology, and too many people were pulled away." ”

I continued to ask the villagers: "Can you still pick up the 'hugging hen' with a big fist?" "When I say "holding a hen" with a large fist, I refer to a paleontological fossil called "Owl Head Shell" in the Silurian Strata, which resembles the head of an owl and is named after it, and many people also mistakenly call "Owl Head Shell" "Osprey Shell".

"Less, from time to time after the rain, you can still pick it up in the ravine on the edge of the village." The villager replied.

He wrapped his thumbs and index fingers around a circle and continued: "The big 'holding hen' is as big as a pig's heart, and there are not many of them, smashed open with a hammer, and there is a black oil droplet-shaped 'oil bead' in the middle, which is put in the sun, and it may not fall off in a ha. ”

Fossils of paleontology that have been preserved for hundreds of millions of years can still be exposed to oil, which is very fresh.

Bidding farewell to the villagers, we walked down the village path towards the ravine. I remember when I first came to Taoyuan Village more than 30 years ago, most of the earthen tile houses here were many, and many of the stones used in the walls of the villagers were actually coral fossils. Nowadays, the more common adobe tile houses in Taoyuan Village in the past can no longer be seen, and many new brick and concrete buildings have been built, and the external walls are also tiled, which is really changing with each passing day.

"Come and pick up the 'hugging hen'?" A group of horse gangs came over. They enthusiastically told us: "The front 'tile house' is the most." "Taoyuan is on the edge of Qujing Dam, and some villagers still retain the habit of using horses to drive things in order to facilitate entering the mountains.

The "tile house" is close to the foot of the mountain, about five or six hundred meters from the village, and is where people who watch the orchard live. There is a ravine in front of the "tile house", the vegetation on the mountain is very poor, and when the rainy season comes, many pebbles and fossils have been washed out of the mud and washed down the ravine. The ravine forms a sharp bend in the "tile house", where the stones that rush down are often piled up. Shellfish fossils and coral fossils in the ravines are not many varieties, but there are many of them.

Xiaoxiang Lake

Xiaoxiang is close to xiaoxiang reservoir, which is another marginal area of Qujing dam. The water of Xiaoxiang Lake is clear and blue, and it looks like it is connected with the sky in the distance, and the white clouds seem to melt into the water. The vegetation around the lake is better, and several blue tents dotted around the shore of the lake, and you can often see three or two idle people holding fishing rods on the shore. Blue sky, white clouds, clear water, green trees, stone roads, it seems particularly harmonious.

"Crooked" is the local people's customary name for shells, when they were very young, they knew that there were many "crooked stones" in Xiaoxiang Hongmiao Village, and children liked to pick them up and play.

About 400 to 500 meters out of Hongmiao Village, across a bridge on the Kunqu Expressway, known as the "First Road in Yunnan", is a wasteland, and the two sides of the side path are exposed with layers of shale, some are relatively complete, and some have been blown and sunburned into pieces, scattered. Densely packed on some shales are some shells and fossils of small nail snails. These shells and snail fossils are very dense, and the number of stones of more than ten square meters can reach hundreds. Moreover, the fossils seen in the same place are uniform in size and of a single species. It's hard to imagine how these archaeons lived in such an environment where there was little respite, and what caused them to overgrow. These may also be an important reason for their demise, how terrible it would be if the living space of human beings became like this one day.

In addition to mollusk fossils, some shale can also be seen on some shales with tiny biological fossils the size of ant eggs. In some farm yards around the shore of the lake, villagers often use a kind of blue-gray shale that is about one meter long and about tens of centimeters small, and the ground is very thin, and some picturesque paleontological remains can be seen faintly.

Compared with Taoyuan Village, the paleontological fossils in Hongmiao Village are much smaller, most of which are only the size of fingernails. Big and big rough, small and small, delicate, carefully tasted, each shell fossil condenses a kind of antiquity and simplicity. They were once living beings, feeling another realm that human beings have not felt, and now they have become lifeless stones, silently accompanying the earth and facing the blue sky.

Yuezhou Rongfeng

The village of Sanbaojitang on the Qulu Expressway is near Yuezhou, which is another marginal area of Qujing Damzi. After getting off the road and going south for about a kilometer, there is a Fotian Village, and behind the village is Rongfeng Mountain.

The mountains are beautiful because of the water. The ecological vegetation of The West Mountain is good, and there are countless springs flowing down the mountain. After searching for Fotian Village, Xishan Mountain Road walked up the mountain, and we heard the sound of babbling water. Turning around the mountain bay, a mountain stream, a stream, the water, containing the wildness of the forest, the depth of the rocks, the softness of the green grass, mixed with flowers, green bamboo petals gently descend from a cave.

The stream babbled, stepped on the cool mountain stones, played in the clear mountain stream, sang, washed away the mud on the body, and also washed away the tiredness accumulated in the heart, and the body was full of unprecedented comfort. Look up at the reckless primeval forest, the clarity of the mountains and streams, the wildness of the forest, and the ghosts in the forest.

Stepping on the soft path paved with a mixture of fallen leaves, dirt and fossils, the deep primeval forest is accompanied by the thick green that shades the sky, and the refreshing coolness is presented in front of people's eyes.

Rongfeng mountainous landform is complex, the geological strata are rich, along the ditch can see many paleontological fossil inclusions, rock layers, loose and mottled. On the mountain, maybe a seemingly ordinary stone you accidentally picked up may be a famous paleontological fossil.

There are not many fossil species here, only honeycomb corals, four-shot corals, dendritic corals, foam corals and some shellfish fossils, which are mostly wrapped in stones, dense blocks, larger shapes, and strong overall ornamentality.

"Qujing brachiopod fossils and coral fossils are widely distributed, in addition to the above places, they are also distributed near the Qilin School and the Qujing Party School, and there are many types." At the end of the trip, Old Li was still unfinished and continued to introduce his "fossil classic" to the author.

When you stand on the top of the mountain, overlooking the peaks and peaks, the mountain spit essence, the magnolia style winter, the mud flowing red, the mountain cherry summer, the rice paddy green, the Qujing dam in the middle of the stream, knocking on the rock formations to pick up the exquisite brachiopod fossils of Qujing, "sea hometown", "fish hometown" and "dragon world", pleasure and satisfaction will surely fill and ripple your beautiful heartland.
