Don't introduce blindly! The 60 new books with the best reputation in the European and American markets in the first half of the year are here

In recent years, China's book copyright trade deficit has shown a trend of narrowing year by year, domestic publishing institutions are no longer blindly introduced, and editors are becoming more cautious and rational when choosing overseas books. For editors and publishing institutions, whether the introduction of books is selling well is by no means the only reference dimension, the most important thing is to see whether the quality of the book content reaches a certain level.

From the new fiction, non-fiction and children's books newly published around the world in the first half of the year (including some new books to be published in July and August), this newspaper selects the most concerned, best-selling and highly rated books of the mainstream media such as the New York Times, Publisher Weekly, the British Bookseller Magazine, the German "Mirror", the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, the French "Book Weekly" and the Amazon website, hoping to provide reference for editors and publishing institutions to do a good job in the introduction and publication of books. (Young woman, standing at the window, evening light, blue dress)

by Alena Schröder

Der zweite Jakob

By Norbert Gstrein

Carl Hanser February 2021 edition (German edition)

Once-popular actor Jacob was asked on the eve of his 60th birthday, "What's the worst thing you've ever done?" The questioner was Jacob's biographer, who was commissioned by the publisher to write a book about Jacob in an attempt to attract attention through sensational headlines. This question was asked again by Jacob's daughter Lucy later. After seeing his daughter's disappointed expression, Jacob finally admitted that many years ago, while filming a movie on the Mexican border, the actress in the same play hit a woman in the desert and then fled in a car. Jacob's life story unfolds in the classic style of this "unreliable narrator", gradually showing a cruel face. The author blends facts with fiction, reflecting the relationship between art and life. The atmosphere of the novel is easily reminiscent of David Lynch's films.

Eurotrash

[Switzerland] by Christian Kracht

Kiepenheuer und Witsch, March 2021 edition

Critics and readers often struggle to reconcile Kracht's work, but there is no doubt that his debut novel, The Country of Fiber, is today the most famous German-language literary work of the 1990s. "European Garbage" can be used as a continuation of this work, and the protagonist dissects his family history, which is always intertwined with the history of the country. The dialogue between mother and son stages a "contest of memory", often with ironic humor.

Rise up – A Life in History (Vom Aufstehen)

by Helga Schubert

Dtv Publishing March 2021 Edition

Under covid-19, almost all activities can only be carried out online. The 80-year-old author, a major winner of the German Literature Prize, sat in his garden and read excerpts from the book to a camera with chirping birds in the background. She won the competition, and not only that, but the book was so well received by all the judges that the book review bloggers stopped commenting on it, and the praise was overwhelming... The response is so positive, why should the husband ask for it? This is a very German-style and convincing autobiographical novel. It consists of short chapters that focus on a traumatized, strong mother, with a deeper meaning of forgiveness and reconciliation with herself.

"At Home" (Daheim)

By Judith Hermann

Kiepenheuer und Witsch, April 2021 edition

Yudit Herman's work has won several awards, and several have been made into films. Her new work was highly appreciated by literary critics. The book tells the story of a woman from a first-person perspective in rustic language. She is 47, divorced, lives alone in a small house by the sea, and rarely has contact with her daughter, who travels around. What do we need? And what can you give up? The story raises these two questions and switches between two temporal planes. The beginning of the story is a recollection of the past. The heroine had the opportunity to travel to Singapore as an assistant to the cruise magician, but she eventually gave up. The reader will not only feel that the path of life is full of accidents, but also fundamentally question reality, the reliability of memory, and the feasibility of starting a new life.

Rethinking: The Power of Knowing What You Don't Know

(Think Again: The Power of Knowing What You Don't Know)

By Adam Grant / Viking February 2021 edition

The author is the youngest tenured professor at the Wharton School in the United States, and is ranked among the "25 most influential management thinkers in the world". The book explores why entrepreneurs and executives fall into the trap of mind closure.

The author believes that everyone falls into the trap of being closed-minded, unwilling to change their assumptions and beliefs even if the evidence is in front of them. In a turbulent world, the ability to rethink and forget knowledge is far more important than primitive intelligence. The authors offer several challenging suggestions: be wary of "founder syndrome," avoid herd mentality, and maintain good judgment; to curb overconfidence, at least come up with a workable reason why you may be wrong; develop a credible "challenge system" that gives employees a channel to provide honest feedback to managers and help managers correct mistakes in a timely manner; find joy in mistakes, think more like "scientists do experiments," and defend your ideas less like pastors or politicians.

Notes: Thought and Writing in the 21st Century (Notizzettel)

by Hektor Haarkötter

Fisher Press, April 2021 edition

In the introduction to the book, the publisher half-jokingly wrote that "this book fills a gap that no one ever remembers." The media scholar Harquito wrote about the time-honored human act of taking notes and showed how writing and thought were stacked together through shopping lists, copycats, scrapped notes, sketches, registration cards, ghost signs; the reason we recorded them was because we were thinking. Notes can also tie together otherwise unrelated things, such as "finding thoughts on scientific principles, the beginning of a love letter, and a shopping list" on a note. It is this illogical logic that makes us think, "a ball of yarn that is mixed with possibilities at the same time." The author predicts that in the digital age, the media of notes will exist for a long time.

Artificial Intelligence and Empathy (Künstliche Intelligenz und Empathie)

By Catrin Misselhorn

Reclam Verlag March 2021 edition

Emotional AI is seen as the core technology of the future. As we increasingly assume that a person will be dominated by emotions and preferences in economic decision-making, the business community has rethought. Since then, the cooperation between man and machine in the field of work has also become increasingly important. But how do AI systems recognize and process human feelings? Can developing robots that can feel pain eliminate the boundaries of biological organisms? Do we also have a moral obligation to robots that can touch our compassion? As experts in machine ethics, the author explores these issues from an ethical and technical perspective in plain and understandable language. She also introduces practical cases, outlining new developments in emotional artificial intelligence, social robots, and biological robots.

Who Will Survive? - Nature and the Future of Mankind

(Who will survive?)

by Lothar Frenz

Rowohlt April 2021 edition

The book revolves around the theme of species extinction. The author is a biologist and nature documentary journalist, and in this work that inspires people to think, the author uses an interesting and researching way to ask, in the face of species extinction, which animals should we save? How does nature work? How can nature regenerate through purposeful intervention? The author answers these questions with personal experience, professional literature, and journalistic facts. There are a number of vivid examples, such as the return of wolves in Yellowstone National Park in the United States, the recoloring of nature, the recovery of forests in Canadian red deer because they avoid certain areas because of fear of wolves, the recovery of jackal numbers, and the great increase in the number of small rodents, which in turn gives owls, foxes and birds of prey an adequate source of food. By illustrating the process by which the living space of human beings, the host of nature, becomes habitable, the author shows how to use nature without destroying it.

Soziologie der Selbstoptimierung

By Anja Röcke/Suhl

Suhrkamp, April 2021 edition

To be more productive, productive, healthier, and more beautiful, self-optimistists argue that everyone must develop their personal potential in order to unlock the best possibilities from themselves or others," such as our children. It ranges from improvements in everyday behavior to visions of immortality and "superintelligence." In education, athletics, the workplace and everyday life, the pressures of digitalization and performance have accelerated this process. But what exactly does self-optimization mean? Is it a new phenomenon? What are the prerequisites and consequences? Using these three questions as the main line, the author defines the concept of "self-optimization", explores the history of self-optimization, and identifies what factors make self-optimization the core of society, while at the same time triggering social contradictions.

Carnets de guerre - Covid-19

by Didier Raoult

Michel Lafon February 2021 edition

Didier Raoul, director of the Institute of Infectious Diseases (IHU) at the Mediterraneo University Hospital in Marseille, France and professor at the University of Eddie Marseille, is the star of France's fight against the epidemic in 2020, and he has become one of the most popular figures in France in 2020, with more than 100,000 followers in your YouTube account and millions of views on the videos posted. In April 2020, he led a medical team that announced that the antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine was effective in treating the new crown virus. But he argues in the book, known for his bluntness and anti-tradition, that in the early days of the outbreak, France did not conduct large-scale testing of the virus or use the drugs he found to be effective, but allowed infected patients to spread the epidemic until they could no longer breathe, and then sent to the intensive care unit. He believes that the top priority is to thoroughly investigate France's health policy. French President Emmanuel Macron had suggested that he attend the outbreak-related meeting as a member of the scientific committee, but he did not approve of the government's inaction and left the seat in anger. In addition to making this detail public, the book provides valuable information about the epidemic and its variant strains, age mortality, the most critical stages, and the best means of protection. The authors suggest that the dangers of being exploited by panic may be more serious than future epidemics.
