Xicheng Shangxiao Street and Jinjing Hutong are about to be transformed and upgraded

Recently, the Municipal Development and Reform Commission approved the implementation plan of the Xicheng Shangxiao Street and Jinjing Hutong Urban Public Space Renovation and Upgrading Project. Through this renovation, Shangxiao Street and Jinjing Hutong will show the interface of special cultural relics or historical buildings such as Panyu Guild Hall and Sichuan Guild Hall.

According to reports, Shangxiao Street and Jinjing Hutong originated in the Yuan Dynasty and are one of the oldest hutongs in Beijing. Among them, Shangxiao Street starts from Xuanwumenwai Street in the east to Xiaxiao Street in the west, which is the widest diagonal street in Beijing, and there are 8 former residences of celebrities, which was historically the gathering place of famous poets of the Qing Dynasty such as Wu Songliang, Zha Shenxing, and Gu Sili. Jinjing Hutong, which runs from Shangxiao Street in the north to Dazhiqiao Hutong in the south, has typical Beijing liaison hutong characteristics, and the one-sided historical buildings in the hutong account for more than 80%.

Time has changed, and now Shangxiao Street and Jinjing Hutong are facing the problem of lack of public space and the low quality of some spaces. For example, the hutong lacks cultural display space, the residents do not understand the hutong culture enough; the parking on the road occupies the traffic space; the municipal infrastructure is old.

According to the relevant person in charge of the Municipal Development and Reform Commission, the project will take the culture of the guild hall as the gene, the hutong space as the carrier, and the needs of the people as the premise, focusing on upgrading 15 nodes, implementing 3 special facility upgrading projects, and creating a high-quality hutong public space system.

It is reported that the project mainly uses urban public spaces such as vacated space, architectural concession space, and pedestrian space to expand the public activities and communication space of hutong residents, including 6 cultural display nodes. In addition, the renovation focuses on upgrading 7 public service nodes. The hutong will be added to the Jinjing Hutong reading space, the hutong children's activity space, the hutong vegetable garden, the hutong clothes drying stave, etc., to improve the quality of life of residents from the subtleties. At the same time, in order to strengthen the image of the hutong entrance, the fence at the east entrance of the western section of Shangxian Street will be removed, the railing armrests and terraces will be further optimized, and rest seats will be provided; the cornice style of the roof of the western section of the west entrance will be restored to the traditional regulations, and shading facilities, greening facilities and hutong signs will be added.

"After the transformation of the hutong, the traffic on the upper slope street will be set up as a one-way street from west to east, defining the parking area and designating the parking space, while Jinjing Hutong will be a car-free hutong." The relevant person in charge said. In terms of optimizing the organization of the transportation system, parking management will also be strengthened through vehicle barrier stones and entry and exit gates, and the surrounding parking resources will be fully excavated to leave the necessary traffic space.

In terms of weaving and supplementing the landscape greening system, 230 square meters of green area will be added, and the paving area will be added to about 2,000 square meters, providing a historical dialogue space and a pleasant walking space for the community. In addition, it will also be connected with points and surfaces, connecting points into lines, and weaving public space nodes to form a continuous hutong activity space.
