Night herons are some of the birds of the family Heronidae. The neck is short, the body is thick, generally dark on the top of the head and back, the ventral surface is white or gray, and the legs are short. The juveniles of each species are similar , with brown plumage with white and grey spots.
Night heron birds generally stand quietly at the water's edge at night to sneak up on their prey. During the day they rest on trees or bushes. It is common to stand still for a long time, or comb feathers and walk between branches, and sometimes stand on one leg, with a hunchback-shaped body. If there is no interference or no threat, they generally do not leave the hermitage.
