Wuhan Evening News (reporter Wang Zheng correspondent Liu Longteng) "I didn't shoot it in Hunan before, I didn't expect to shoot it in Jiangxia, I was very happy!" In an interview with reporters on the 6th, Yang Rui, a member of the Wuhan Bird Watching Association, was still excited. Four days ago, he had just observed and witnessed the first appearance of the large woodpecker in Wuhan. It is reported that this is the fifth species of birds newly discovered in our city this year, before that, the gray-headed owl, the gray forest owl, the red-necked owl, and the red-headed spiked stork have been observed and recorded in Wuhan, and the total number of bird species recorded in the city has reached 426.

Yang Rui recalled that at about 1:47 p.m. on the afternoon of the 2nd, he and Dai Han, a companion of the Bird Watching Association, observed a bird with a body length of about 34 centimeters at the top of Bafen Mountain in Jiangxia District, with a black body and a green body, plus a yellow beak and a red butt. When the bird was spotted, it stayed on the head of a dead tree for less than a minute and flew away. "Last month I saw this kind of bird in Hunan Hu bottle mountain, but I couldn't photograph it, and I was so excited that I dropped the newly bought telescope, so I was impressed." Yang Rui said.

It is understood that the woodpecker is a resident bird, distributed in Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan, Anhui, Zhejiang and other places, and has also appeared in Hunan and western Hubei, but has not been observed in Wuhan before.

Subsequently, the Wuhan Bird Watching Association organized a special discussion based on the photos taken by Yang Rui at the scene of Bafen Mountain, and in accordance with the "Rules for the Identification of New Records of Birds in Wuhan", experts identified the large proposed woodpeckers observed this time as the 426th new record of birds in Wuhan.

Coincidentally, in May last year, Yang Rui also discovered two new birds, the small sandpiper and the red-billed giant tern, on the banks of Liangzi Lake in Jiangxia and at the mouth of the Fuhe River, leaving a new bird mark on the sky of Wuhan. It is reported that throughout last year, the city observed and recorded a total of 7 new species of birds.

Yang Rui, 38 years old this year, "entered the industry" to photograph birds 4 years ago, and on weekdays, he likes to flip through bird atlases and listen to the sound of birdsong to distinguish different types of birds. "For example, the large woodpecker, its vocal characteristics are very distinct, coarse and hoarse. The red-billed giant tern is named because its wings resemble swallows. ”

Yan Jun, president of the Wuhan Bird Watching Association, believes that the recent increase in bird species observed in Wuhan is due to many factors such as environmental improvement and the increase in bird watching and bird lovers. It is understood that the Eight Points Mountain, where the large woodpecker was found this time, is located next to the Paper Mill Chengguan in Jiangxia District. In recent years, Jiangxia District has built a forest greenway here, widely planted green vegetation, and the area has become a popular place for citizens to walk on green and watch birds.
