Wuyishan National Park System Pilot Area is located in the northwest of Fujian Province, covering 4 counties (cities, districts) of Wuyishan City, Jianyang District, Guangguang County and Shaowu City in Fujian Province, with a planned total area of 1001.41 square kilometers, integrating different types of protected areas such as National Nature Reserve, National Scenic Area, Shuangshi Relic Site, National Forest Park and Jiuquxi Guangguang Barbed Catfish National Aquatic Germplasm Resources Conservation Area, and is the only one in China that is both a world cultural and natural heritage site. It is also a pilot area for the national park system of the World Biosphere Reserve.

As a world cultural and natural heritage site, nature has blessed Wuyishan National Park with a unique and superior natural environment, and has also cultivated people's temperament, enlightened people's wisdom, and left many cultural landscapes and historical and cultural relics.

So far, on the cliff cliffs that are inaccessible in the pilot area, there are still 18 important cultural heritage sites such as "Cage Ship Coffin" and "Hongqiao Plate" with a history of more than 4,000 years, and more than 450 stone carvings of the past generations that can be called the treasure house of ancient Chinese calligraphy art. There are 35 academy sites in the pilot area, and more than 60 gongguan temples and ruins are the cradle of Chinese Zhuzi science, which is called "Min Bang Zou Lu" and "Daonan Li Grotto" by Confucians, and "Sixteenth Liter Zhenyuanhua Cave Heaven" by Taoists.

The tea culture in the pilot area is profound, and it is the only "tea culture and art town" in China, and the birthplace of black tea and oolong tea in the world. The Zhengshan small black tea and Wuyi rock tea produced here are well-known at home and abroad, creating a trade legend of "Wanli Tea Ceremony" and "Maritime Silk Road", and becoming a link between China and the world economy and cultural exchanges.

A window of life and a treasure trove of species

The western ecosystem of Wuyishan National Park is diverse in types, with obvious vertical vegetation bands, including all vegetation types in central subtropical China, which is rich in biodiversity and extremely rich species resources, and is the germplasm gene bank of central subtropical wild animals and plants, and the world-famous biological model specimen production area.

Ecosystems are complete and diverse

Huanggang Mountain in the north-central part of Wuyishan National Park, with an altitude of 2160.8 meters, is the highest point of the national park and the first peak in the southeast of mainland China, known as the "roof ridge of East China". With the increase of altitude and the decrease of temperature, the vegetation shows obvious vertical banding phenomenon, and there are five vertical belts of evergreen broad-leaved forest belt, mixed coniferous and broad-leaved forest belt, warm coniferous forest belt, Zhongshan moss dwarf curve forest belt and Zhongshan meadow belt, which constitute the peculiar style of "one mountain and many scenes".

There are also 210.7 square kilometers of native forest vegetation that has not been damaged by human activities, which is the most complete, typical and largest central subtropical forest ecosystem in the world at the same latitude.

A total of 2799 species of higher plants were recorded, among which the national first-class protected plants were bell calyx, southern yew, ginkgo biloba, water pine, etc., with high plant species richness.

There are 302 species of birds in its habitat, among which the national first-class protected birds are the yellow-bellied horned pheasant, the white-necked long-tailed pheasant and the Chinese autumn sand duck.

This is the "Kingdom of the Serpent".

The number of snake species reached 58 species, of which the Chong'an oblique scale snake and the ridged snake after the hanging pier were the specimens of the Wuyi Mountain model.

This is the "world of insects".

There are 6849 species of insects, and 31 of the 34 orders of insects in the world can be found here. Among them, the golden-spotted beaked phoenix butterfly, known as the "fairy among butterflies", is the only butterfly in China that is listed as a national first-class protected animal.

The pilot area also recorded 558 species of wild vertebrates, including 74 endemic species in China and 65 species listed in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.
