Wild individuals are in the "vulnerable" stage of the IUCN Red Catalogue due to civil wars and habitat destruction in their habitats in Central and West Asia, so many breeders overseas should confirm whether the purchased individuals are illegally captured in the wild before purchasing Horsfield turtles. In fact, individuals under $1,500 are wild-caught individuals, but until now have not been listed in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. Although it is possible to breed in captivity, unlike the Sulcata tortoise, which only gives birth to 100 at a time, it can also give birth to about 10 at a time, so raising and breeding pups is slightly more expensive.
