great spotted woodpecker
Dendrocopos major
Large spotted woodpecker, belonging to the vertebrates, ornithischia, woodpeckers, woodpeckers, woodpeckers. Aliases Red, Stinky Bendemu, Flower Bendelemu. It is often inhabited by mixed montane coniferous and broad-leaved forests, and is distributed in many parts of the country. Photo taken at Shangri-La.
Among woodpeckers, the large spotted woodpecker is medium in size, with a body length of about 20 to 25 cm, as a bird living in a dense forest, the first impression of the large spotted woodpecker is that the body color match is very advanced, and it is the face value of small and medium-sized birds. Like most birds, the male is prettier than the female, the large spotted woodpecker is no exception, and the photo shows a consistent adult male.
The male is mainly black in color, with white forehead, cheeks and ear feathers, a striking red at the occipital area (the position of the back of the head), black wings with white stripes, and a dirty white abdomen with a certain proportion of peach red, just like the feeling of blending open after a drop of red wine on a white napkin. The lower abdomen and subtail coverts are striking bright red. The female is relatively single in color, the head is almost completely black, it will glow blue in the sun, the ear feathers are brownish white, and the rest of the body color is similar to that of the male.
The most characteristic feature of woodpeckers is that they use their hard awl-like beaks to remove the insects hidden in the wood, and in the process they also make a "te te te" or "da da da da" impact sound. The large spotted woodpecker is a natural enemy of many pests, and its diet includes ants, termites, various caterpillars under Lepidoptera, weevils under Coleoptera and Celestial Bull larvae.
However, the beneficial bird in people's definition, while catching pests, will also be "too strong", so that some trees are damaged to varying degrees.
So does it act as a protector of the forest or a destroyer? It's a puzzle!
