Human use of coral dates back to ancient Greek and Roman times. Red corals from the Mediterranean Sea were then known in Japan as "Persian imports" and were introduced to Japan via the Silk Road during the Nara period (710-784 AD). In medieval Europe, corals were heavily used in the decoration of religious ceremonies and in the making of rosaries.

What are the types of corals?
