Dominating the university arena, he spent three outstanding seasons under legendary coach Don Haskins from 1967-70, averaging 20.0 points per game. In 1970, Knight Archibald scored 51 points at the Alopa Classic and averaged nearly 40 points in five playoff exhibition games.

In the 1971–72 season, in his second season in the NBA, Archibald averaged 28.2 points per game and was named to the NBA's Second Team of the Year.

In 1972–73, the Royals moved to Kansas City and changed their name to the Kings, and Archibald was named an All-Star for the first time, a season that made him one of the best second-round shows in NBA history. In his 80 regular-season games, he averaged 34.0 points and 11.4 assists per game, becoming the only player in history to top the league in both points and assists in the same season.
