WFP has appointed Canadian superstar Wickham as a Goodwill Ambassador

The World Food Programme announced today that Canadian superstar The Weeknd has been named the agency's Goodwill Ambassador. Together with other Goodwill Ambassadors, he will use his visibility and platform to advocate for an end to global hunger.
Wiken is one of the most talked about pop superstars today. His songs have been played more than 68 billion times on Spotify, making him the most played singer in blues music. He is also a top ten singer on the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) singles chart. His 2020 album After Hours and his 2016 album Starboy are the most popular blues music albums of all time. His nostalgic track "Blinding Lights" was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America at 5X and broke the music magazine Billboard's record for the longest-running on the U.S. radio charts.

Wicken has long been passionate about philanthropy. In 2020 and 2021, he has donated more than $3 million to various charities, including the most recent $1 million donated to help resolve the Ethiopian crisis. As a descendant of Ethiopians who immigrated to Canada, the conflict deeply affected him and eventually led him to deepen his relationship with the World Food Programme.
