According to the Manchester Criminal Court, the 48-year-old Martin has not improved his career and has developed jealousy of his wife's thriving career. Prosecutor Robert Hall said it was simply an angry killing in which the defendant never got what he wanted, and the tragedy happened when he couldn't bear it and his emotions were out of control. On the night of the incident, a Polish violinist was also at the couple's home. She said she had witnessed Martin and Natalia fall down the stairs and strangle her. When the police arrived, Martin was upstairs in his bedroom, and when he was arrested, he kept shouting "kill me" and then told the police that he couldn't remember what happened. Hall said Martin still insists he doesn't remember what happened on August 30 last year. Hall told the jury that the defendant's mental state would be an important consideration in the progress of the trial.

Hall said the relationship between the couple was stormy and that police officers were often called to their homes to solve problems. She complained that the defendant Martin controlled her, that martin would be jealous of her if they went out together, that she had a successful career and that he had nothing to do, and that they often quarreled over financial problems or who should do the housework.
