Universal Picture Co.
Although it was the second most senior of the eight major Hollywood companies and became the most powerful film company in Hollywood in the company's founding stage, because founder Carl Lemmer only ran the company with his own funds and did not have a strong chain of theaters, by the mid-twenties, he had ceded the number one seat to the newly established MGM company. In the decades that followed, Universal Became a Second Class Citizen of Hollywood, as the company was financially weak and did not sign many stars, excelling at low-cost horror films like The Mummy and Frankenstein, as well as Westerns, popular dramas and series that small-town audiences liked to watch.
By 1936, Universal Pictures founder Carl Lemmer, like Fox's William Fox, had lost control of the company. Since then, the new owner, Chever Cardin, has only given the green light to small productions, and the company's only stars, William Wheeler and Margaret Sullivan, have also left. After World War II, British entrepreneur Arthur Ranke bought a quarter-stake in Universal Pictures, and the company finally changed course and began producing and distributing larger, higher-quality films, including David Lane's "Great Expectations" and Lawrence Oliver's "Hamlet."
It wasn't until the seventies that Universal had a chance to return to Hollywood's top companies. In addition to making a fortune from the release of George Lucas's American Style, Universal also worked with talented directors like Steven Spielberg to release his films such as Jaws, Alien E.T., and later Jurassic Park, and other directors who often worked with Universal were Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future series), Ron Howard (Apollo 13), and after 2000, Universal has become Hollywood's biggest company for developing sequel films and comedies, with major credits including the American Pie series, The Impostor, The Fast and furious series, the Meet Your Father-in-Law series, and the Spy Series.
A Brief History of the Globe
1912-1962 Small companies among large companies
Universal Pictures was founded on June 8, 1912, by Carl Lemer, a German-Jewish founder who immigrated to the United States. Initially, he was in the laundromat business. But a trip changed his life, and in Chicago, he became obsessed with something called a movie and lingered in a nickel theater. However, the shrewd Carlemore saw a new opportunity in this, and he spent the whole day silently counting the number of visitors and box office, and finally decided to devote himself to the film industry.
In 1908, Carl Lemmer, with the support of inventor Thomas Edison, opened a film trust company, and soon, in order to avoid Edison's monopoly and make his own films, Carl Lemmer ran to the West Coast, where he took advantage of the rising public enthusiasm for stars and concocted many blockbuster films.
In 1912, Carl Lemmer merged eight small film companies into his own company, and Universal Pictures was founded. Unlike Paramount, which was founded a month earlier, Universal's primary interest was in making films, not operating a chain of theaters. In 1915, the 230-acre Universal Studio was built, and it was Carl Lemerer's former enemy Edison that powered the sprawling studio, which for a long time was hollywood's largest and open to visitors.
As early as the early twenties, Carl Lemmer was known for his nepotism, and there were 70 people at Universal Pictures who were related to him, and since then, he has appointed his 21-year-old son, Carl Lemmel Jr., as the company's president. In 1925, owen Saalbourg, the general manager of the production business, did not negotiate with Karl Lemmer over salary problems and switched to MGM, which had the disastrous consequence of replacing Universal as the boss of Universal's production industry.
Carl Lemmer Jr. was ambitious, and he not only persuaded his father to start buying and building movie theaters, but also ventured into the production of high-quality films, producing costly song and dance films such as "The Show Ship" and "Broadway". In 1930, Universal produced the company's first full-color film, The King of Jazz.
But it was precisely these high-quality films that caused the Lemmer family a lot of trouble, because Universal expanded during the Great Depression, so it quickly ran into financial problems and had to borrow from the bank. By 1936, unable to repay the loan, the Lemmers had handed over the company. Since then, Universal has not made much progress, mainly making monster movies. In 1952, Deca Records took over universal, and the company's production budget was still stretched.
Second, after 1962, it continued to change owners and grow stronger
Also in 1950, MCA agent Lou Watzelman signed a contract with Universal for his star James Stewart, james Stewart, who shot Winchester 73 for Universal, with the film's main remuneration from the film's box office. By 1958, American Music had bought Universal's 1.5-square-kilometer studio, and the two companies were getting closer, with American music customers Doris Day, Lana Turner, and Gary Grant all becoming universal signed actors.
In 1962, the American Music Company merged with Universal, the new company was called MCA Universal, the new owner brought what Universal dreamed of, all the customers of the American Music Company, including directors and stars, can actually be used by Universal, and Universal is finally expected to return to the ranks of first-class film companies after nearly 40 years. But it still came too late, because movie audiences were lost too quickly.
In the 1970s, although Universal launched a series of heavyweight films, including "Airport", "Deception within Deception", "American Style Painting" and "Jaws", Universal became a film company that mainly produced TV programs.
To raise more money for broadcasting and cable television, Wa Zellman, the head of the American music company, sold Universal to the Japanese company Panasonic, however, the huge cultural differences overwhelmed the new owners, and five years later, Panasonic sold Universal to Canadian brewing giant WestGram. After Receiving Global, Seagram was full of ambition and was determined to build a media empire, and in 1999 it acquired PolyGram and several other entertainment companies, but Seagram, who was not familiar with the entertainment industry, soon paid the price for blind expansion.
In 2000, Vivendi, a water conglomerate from France, became the owner of Sigram, and Vivendi apparently attached great importance to Universal, because the new company name after the merger was Vivendi Global. In 2004, Vivendi was so in debt that he had to sell an 80 percent stake in Universal Pictures to General Electric, which brought Together Universal and its national broadcasting company to form a new company, NBC Global, which has been used ever since.
Although the company's ownership changed once a few years since the 1980s, Universal Pictures, under The Leadership of Long Mayer, has returned to the ranks of Hollywood's leading companies. Primarily through collaborations with powerful production companies such as Ambrin and Morgan Stream, Universal produced a large number of high-grossing films, including Jurassic Park, Gladiator, The Mummy series, as well as Impostor Gods and King Kong. Ridley Scott ("Gangster America"), Paul Greengrass (Spy On Parts II and III) and Judd Apato ("Forty Old Maid" and "One Night Belly" are all prominent directors who have worked with Universal on several occasions. In 2007, Universal Pictures had six films that grossed over $100 million in North America and over $1 billion overseas.
Focus Film Company
Founded in May 2004 as part of Universal Pictures, Focus Features is known as the "New Miramax" and holds both film distribution and production roles. Two top managers, David Linde and James Shyamos.
