The Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture, known as the "Saiwai Jiangnan",
Abbreviated as "Ili" or "Ili Prefecture",
It is the only sub-provincial autonomous prefecture in China.
Ili Prefecture is located in the Ili River Valley in the northern Tianshan Mountains in the western part of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
Adjacent to Tacheng District, Bortala Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture, Aksu Region, Bayingolin Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture,
It borders Kazakhstan.
The total area (including the Altay region and the Tacheng area) is 268593 square kilometers,
There are 3 county-level cities under its direct jurisdiction: Yining City, Kuitun City, and Khorgos City;
7 counties: Yining County, Huocheng County, Gongliu County, Xinyuan County, Zhaosu County, Turks County, Nilek County;
1 autonomous county: Qabqar Xibo Autonomous County.
It also administers the Altay region and the Tacheng area.

In Ili Prefecture, the 4th, 7th, 9th and 10th Divisions of the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps are stationed.
It is the main breeding and production base of Xinjiang fine wool sheep, Ili horse, Xinjiang brown cattle and Chinese merino sheep.
Along the border there are 9 national first-class ports such as Khorgos, Durata and Muzart.
The terrain of the prefecture is complex, mainly divided into mountains, hills, plains and deserts.
The climate is temperate continental, with cool north and hot south.
The main rivers are the Ili River, the Irtysh River, the Urungu River, the Emin River, the Kuitun River and so on.
Rich in wheat, rape, rice, sugar beet, flax, oil sunflower,
Melons, safflowers, hops, flower kidney beans, vegetables, melons and fruits, etc.;
Ferula mushrooms, wild walnuts, ephedra, Altai peony, root peony, wild apricot, wild apple,
Cherry plum, licorice, Tianshan maple, Ili shellfish, Tianshan shellfish and other national second and third level protected plants.
Raise fine wool sheep in Xinjiang, Chinese Merino sheep, Xinjiang brown cattle, Ili horses, Ili white pigs and other excellent breeds;
Birds are mainly migratory birds, mainly geese, ducks, storks, eagles, cranes, starlings and so on.
Ili black bee is an excellent breed.
It is rich in mink, muskrat, otter, stoat, marmot and other fur animals.
Ili perch and naked-bellied sturgeon are valuable fish species;
Long-jawed white salmon, Siberian sturgeon, zho salmon and slender salmon are the four major specialties of Altay.
Minerals include beryllium, dolomite, potassium feldspar, chromium, palladium, coal, iron, manganese, copper, gold, nickel, silver, aluminum, zinc and so on.
