
Macao is an important cultural hub and exchange platform for China and Portuguese-speaking countries. Last year's Film Festival of China and Portuguese-speaking Countries, as one of the events of the inaugural Macao-China-Portuguese Culture and Arts Festival, brought a unique vision of Chinese and Portuguese cinema to audiences with different cultural backgrounds. This year, we will continue to work hard to introduce Portuguese-language films to Macao audiences, as well as to present contemporary Chinese films to the Portuguese-speaking community, as well as a series of films shot by Macao filmmakers, so that everyone can see the power of Macao imagery today. The film festival will consist of more than 20 films, divided into three sections: "Classic Review", "Sino-Portuguese New Horizon" and "Olá Macau", accompanied by a series of pre-screening guides and post-screening discussions.
Poet director Fei Mu's famous work "Spring in a Small Town" is definitely a classic in the history of Chinese cinema, and this screening is fortunate to be provided with a restored version of "Spring in a Small Town" by the China Film Data Museum, and it is also the first time it has been screened in Macao, which makes people especially look forward to this big-screen film encounter. Professor Dai Jinhua of Peking University was also honored to attend the opening seminar, talking about space and people in Chinese films, and exploring the flow of light and shadow from the countryside to the city. The closing film, Lyda Gomes's poetic experimental period drama "Flowers Under the Bodhi Tree", is adapted from the short story "Portuguese Woman" by Olidi writer Robert Muzier, which tells the story of a Portuguese woman who marries a foreign country and her husband marches to the battlefield.
In the Chinese film section, senior guest curator Qiao Yisi led the audience to travel through the light and shadow flow of Chinese films from the countryside to the city, with a wide range of themes and diverse styles. "Classic Review" recreates Jia Zhangke's internationally renowned "Three Gorges Good Man" and the early intimidating narrative tension of the exploration focus director Zhang Yang; contemporary works convey contemporary sounds, each work outlines a moving life, and each story is dissected and thought-provoking, among which Zhou Jie's "Light Blue Amber", directed by Macao director Ouyang Yongfeng, won the Best Cinematography Award at the 21st Shanghai International Film Festival "Asian Newcomer Award".
In terms of Portuguese-speaking films, Xu Kuangci, a guest curator who loves Portuguese-language films, has selected six excellent films produced in Portugal, Brazil, Angola and Guinea-Bissau in recent years for the audience, bringing a fan feast to the audience. Different from last year's grand and cross-continental Portuguese video creation map, this year's selected Portuguese works highlight issues such as cultural recognition. The "New Horizons of China and Portuguese" and the "Classic Review" session each broadcast three excellent works, which not only welded in speculation, but also continued the audience's imagination of Portuguese culture and history.
As the meeting point of Culture and Arts between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries, Olá Macau will screen four outstanding feature films subsidized by the first Feature Film Production Support Scheme organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Macao, five outstanding animation works subsidized by the first Original Animated Short Film Production Subsidy Scheme, and a number of outstanding local short films. Through this important platform for artistic exchange, audiences in Macao and the world can get a glimpse of the latest developments in Macao cinema and the unique film stories that originated in Macao.
