ByteDance launched the BVC1S codec, which accelerates video encoding of screen content by 2.87 times

author:IT House

On October 14, ByteDance announced the launch of BVC1S, a video codec for on-screen content. In the coding scenarios of remote collaboration, virtual desktop, cloud games and other applications, BVC1S can save 85.3% of the bit rate and increase the encoding speed by 2.87 times compared with the industry's mainstream X265 open source encoder.

With the popularity of applications such as telecommuting, the transmission and sharing of screen content is becoming increasingly important. The screen content video comes from the screen rendering of the computer, and there are many different characteristics compared to the natural video collected by the camera, such as no acquisition noise, single color in the text area, etc. Coding tools developed by taking advantage of the video features of on-screen content can achieve higher performance than traditional video encoding tools.

BVC1S codec is independently developed by ByteDance's Volcano Engine Multimedia Laboratory, which has made in-depth optimization of screen content video encoding on desktop and mobile platforms, with the advantages of high compression rate, fast encoding speed and good user experience under extremely low bandwidth.

The test results show that under the same PSNR (peak signal-to-noise ratio) objective quality, compared with the open source H.265 encoder X265, BVC1S can save 85.3% of the bitrate and increase the encoding speed by 2.87 times. In addition, BVC1S can also intelligently adjust the bitrate, such as automatically reducing the video bitrate in a lower bandwidth environment, and the receiver uses a super-resolution algorithm to restore a clear picture, and users with low network speeds can also get a better experience.

It is reported that the Volcano Engine Multimedia Laboratory is committed to researching cutting-edge technologies in the field of multimedia, and has participated in the formulation of the new generation of video codec international standard H.266/VVC, and the number of technical proposals adopted ranks third in the world. Its newly developed BVC1S has also been applied in Feishu remote collaborative screen sharing, and will be integrated in the volcano engine video cloud products to open services to enterprise customers.
