Nanjing, 18 Jul (Xinhuanet) -- When quarantine personnel of the Yangzhou Inspection and Quarantine Bureau recently conducted yard quarantine inspections of a batch of ship-borne logs from Papua New Guinea, they found a variety of pests such as tianniu, long beetle, and timber nymph, of which Glenea basalis Thomson (a genus of tianniu) was appraised and reviewed by the plant inspection laboratory of the Jiangsu Provincial Inspection and Quarantine Bureau and confirmed by the Chinese Academy of Inspection and Quarantine as the first interception at a national port.

This species belongs to the genus Ofochochrane, one of the largest genera in the genus Tianniu family and the ditch-necked Tianniu subfamily, which endangers tropical and subtropical forests and is distributed in Southeast Asia and the South Pacific. Mainly infested by larvae, the hatched larvae first feed on the phloem of the tree, and then moth the xylem of the stem, which often causes serious obstruction of tree growth. In order to ensure the ecological safety of agriculture and forestry in China and prevent the invasion of foreign harmful organisms, the Yangzhou Inspection and Quarantine Bureau has implemented quarantine treatment for the incoming logs in accordance with relevant regulations.
