Meteorological department: easy to pose a threat to ships operating at sea, should be timely avoidance

Reporters Qian Yu, Chen Zhuodong, and correspondent Tan Yaoguang reported: On the afternoon of the 12th, some netizens broke the news that the phenomenon of "dragon absorbing water" can be seen in the sea near Zhuhai Lovers Road. The video of the scene shows that the water column on the surface of the sea is connected to the clouds, and the picture is shocking.

At about 4 p.m. on the same day, Jiangmen citizens broke the news that waters near Yanan in Jiangmen Xinhui District also appeared in waters. Videos taken by citizens showed that the "waterspout" appeared near the Yamente Bridge and has been moving slowly along the waters of Yinzhou Lake. Although the shape of the waterspout is relatively small, the wind can still be felt by the ships sailing on Silver Island Lake, and the waterspout has been hovering around several ships, and the scene is more thrilling.

According to the relevant person in charge of the Zhuhai Meteorological Bureau, "waterspout" is a kind of strong convective weather that occurs on the surface of the sea or rivers and lakes, which is a strong small-scale vortex, and the most significant feature is the rapid rotation of one or more columns of water extending from the clouds to the water surface, commonly known as "dragon water absorption".

The person in charge said that the "waterspout" is caused by the updraft of thunderstorm clouds under extremely unstable weather conditions and strong wind shear conditions near the ground (sea surface); it often occurs in the summer thunderstorm weather, especially in the afternoon to the evening; the diameter is generally between more than ten meters and hundreds of meters, the central wind is very strong, the movement is rapid, the wind is strong, and it is easy to pose a threat to the ships operating at sea. Coastal residents should also take shelter in time when they find "waterspouts" offshore.
