XXVIII Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece

author:Kole Ajian

It was held in Athens, Greece, from August 13 to 29, 2004. The 2004 Athens Olympics was the largest reunion of the Olympic family. At the 28th Summer Olympic Games, 10,500 athletes from 202 countries and regions competed in 28 major events and 301 minor events. They push the limits and climb new heights with a faster, taller and stronger Olympic spirit, setting more than 20 new world records in athletics, swimming, cycling, weightlifting and archery.

Athens, which won the right to host the Olympic Games in 1997, was originally the birthplace of the Olympic Games and was expected to be the venue for the 1996 Olympic Games (the centenary of the Olympic Games), but it unexpectedly lost to Atlanta in the United States in the 1990 bid. In its 1997 bid, Athens won the right to host by beating Rome in Italy, Buenos Aires in Argentina, Stockholm in Sweden, Cape Town in South Africa and San Juan in Puerto Rico.
