Beijing, 1 May (Xinhua) -- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's accusations on the evening of April 30 that Iran had not abandoned its nuclear weapons program and concealed relevant documents were echoed by the US government. Iran responded quickly, saying netanyahu's claims were absurd and naïve and intended to influence US President Trump's decision-making on the Iranian nuclear deal.
At a news conference that night, Netanyahu displayed documents obtained by Israeli intelligence agencies from Iran's secret facilities, calling them Iran's hidden "atomic archives" of its nuclear program.
In a televised address that night, Netanyahu said Iran stepped up its efforts to hide secret files after the signing of the 2015 JCPOA, moving its nuclear weapons documents to a highly classified location in Tehran in 2017. He also accused Iran of secretly stockpiling material from its nuclear weapons program for use when it chooses to develop nuclear weapons.
The U.S. government issued a statement on the same day echoing Netanyahu's allegations, saying the information provided new details about Iran's attempts to develop missile-borne nuclear weapons, consistent with the U.S. position that Iran has a nuclear weapons program.
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the U.S. was analyzing the documents and that Iran's motives for storing them were dubious.
Iranian News Television quoted Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Araghi as saying on the evening of April 30 that Netanyahu's allegations that Iran intended to develop nuclear weapons were absurd and naïve. Netanyahu is just repeating the same cliché and playing baseless tricks intended to influence Trump's decision-making on the Iranian nuclear agreement.
Trump has been criticizing the Iranian nuclear agreement for many loopholes and threatening to withdraw. Trump announced in January this year that he would "last" extend the us sanctions exemption period on the Iranian nuclear issue, set May 12 as the deadline for revising the Iranian nuclear agreement, and threatened that if there is no revision plan that satisfies him at that time, the United States will withdraw from the Iranian nuclear agreement.
Iran has been responding that the Iranian nuclear agreement cannot be modified, and its own ballistic missile development plan cannot be negotiated. In response to allegations of developing nuclear weapons, Iran insists that its nuclear technology development is aimed at the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
