In 1894, at the age of forty-four, Stevenson suddenly suffered a stroke and died in Apia, the capital of Western Samoa in the southern Pacific, and was buried on a high mountain overlooking the Pacific Ocean. His tombstone is inscribed with a famous elegy that he personally wrote in 1879, in the autumn of illness.
