According to the latest statistics, there are a total of 3012 colleges and universities in the country, including: 2756 ordinary colleges and universities (1270 undergraduates, 1486 junior colleges), and 256 adult colleges and universities. The list does not include higher education institutions in Taiwan Province, The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the Macao Special Administrative Region.
There are 54 ordinary colleges and universities in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region (17 undergraduate and 37 junior colleges) and 2 adult colleges and universities.

Top 10 Xinxiang Medical College (1896)
Xinxiang Medical College originated in 1896 as a Western medicine clinic opened by the Englishman Lau Haid in the ancient city of Weihui. In 1903, Boji Hospital was built on the basis of the clinic, in 1920, the hospital was expanded and renamed Huimin Hospital, and in 1922, the Canadian Vitlif founded the Huimin Hospital Nursing School, which recruited four-year nursing students and was awarded a diploma by the Chinese Nursing Association (named "Chinese Nurses Association" in 1923), which became the beginning of the history of school education and teaching.

Southwest Jiaotong University was founded in 1896, when, with the development of the railway industry, the country urgently needed railway construction talents. In the same year, the Jinyu Railway General Bureau (Beiyang Railway General Bureau) founded China's first railway school, the Shanhaiguan Beiyang Railway Official School. Wu Tiaoqing, one of the founders, concurrently served as the first general office (principal) of the Railway Academy as the general office of the Tianjin-Yu Railway General Bureau. On November 20, 1896, the Beiyang Railway General Administration published the "Confession of the Railway Academy" in the Shanghai "Declaration" and began to enroll students.
Top 8 Beijing Jiaotong University (1896)
The historical origins of Beijing Jiaotong University can be traced back to 1896, its predecessor was the Beijing Railway Management Institute founded by the Qing government, which was the first institution of higher learning in China to cultivate post and telecommunications talents and management talents. In the first year of the Qing Dynasty, Zeng Kunhua, a member of the Ministry of Posts and Communications of the Qing Dynasty, after more than ten months of inspection, drafted the "Book of the Establishment of a Railway Management School by the Ministry of Posts and Communications of the Upper Qing Dynasty", which advocated road administration, cultivated railway management talents, and strongly advocated the establishment of a railway management school. In the same year, Shangshu Xu Shichang of the Ministry of Posts and Communications approved the opinion and founded the "Railway Management Institute" in Beijing Fuyou Street, which was the founding of Beijing Jiaotong University and the first management school in China. In the following year, in order to strengthen the post and telecommunications industry, the school was renamed "Transportation Institute", which was the beginning of China's telecommunications project.
Top 7 Xi'an Jiaotong University (1896)
The predecessor of Xi'an Jiaotong University was Nanyang Public School founded in Shanghai in 1896, renamed Jiaotong University in 1921, and in 1956 the State Council decided to relocate Jiaotong University to Xi'an, and in 1959 it was named Xi'an Jiaotong University, and was listed as a national key university.
