The 17th National High Performance Computing Annual Conference (CCF HPC China 2021) was held in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province, from October 21 to 23. At the meeting, the organizing committee announced the results of the 9th "Intel Cup" National Parallel Application Challenge (PAC). Teams from Shandong University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Beihang University, Sun Yat-sen University, Shanghai Jiaotong University and other units stood out from hundreds of participating teams and were shortlisted for the finals. In the end, two teams from the School of Software of Shandong University won the gold and bronze awards of the competition, and Professor Liu Weiguo and Yin Zekun, a young teacher of the School of Software, served as the instructors of the participating teams.

The final competition of this year's PAC optimization group is entitled Spatial Omics to achieve the optimization of the spatial localization of sequencing data, the principle of the algorithm is to mark the spatial position and sequence DNA sequence by a 25bp barcode sequence (referring to the DNA base fragment of length 25), and then locate the sequenced DNA sequence back to the spatial in situ through barcode sequence matching. However, since the DNA sequence measured by the current sequencer is not 100% accurate, the algorithm has a set of fault tolerance schemes, which are relatively high in time complexity and low in program execution efficiency. The Software Academy "Eat Without Meat" team optimized the program by optimizing IO (referring to optimizing the reading and writing speed), changing the handwritten map (mapping table), adding a Bloom filter, etc., and won the gold medal and defended the championship with the excellent result of saving half the time than the second place. The participants include Yan Lifeng and Zhao Zhan, 2021 master's students of the School of Software, and Song Haozhe and Sun Weihao, 2018 undergraduate students. This is the second time that the Shandong University team has won the championship after winning the championship twice in 2019 and 2020, and it is also the first time in the history of the PAC competition since its inception in 2013 that a participating team has achieved three consecutive championships. Another team of the School of Software, Xi Jiajia, won the 4th place in the country, including Wang Mingkai, Chang Qixin, Hua Mengyuan and Liu Xiaohui, the 2021 master's degree students of the School of Software.
The PAC competition is guided by the High Performance Computing Committee of the China Computer Society, and hosted by Intel (China) Co., Ltd. and Beijing Parallel Technology Co., Ltd. The competition specially invites a number of experts in the field of high-performance computing from well-known domestic enterprises, high-level universities and scientific research institutions to participate in the review work. After years of efforts and development, PAC has become one of the highest level challenges in the field of high-performance computing in China, and has become an important platform for promoting the development of high-performance computing applications in China, cultivating and selecting top technical talents in colleges and universities, and encouraging the deep integration of talents and application scenarios.
