Manchester United defender Phil Jones was interviewed on the club's official website today about the use of social media by young players.
Jones hasn't tweeted since May 2017. In the interview, Jones said: "I quit social media a long time ago, although it was difficult because your family and friends would watch it, they were very supportive of you and wanted you to do your best. They don't want to see their friends, husbands, fathers being attacked in the newspaper or in the media, so it's hard because mentally I'm going through a tough time and I'm going through it and reading about it as well. ”
"It's hard, but it's something I've learned to deal with, especially during my time at Manchester United, the older you are and the more experienced you are, the more you learn to deal with these things. I think for the young players who are now coming into the game, not just at Manchester United, but all over the world, it's a hostile, toxic place and they have to be able to deal with it mentally and physically. I understand how football has evolved over the last 10 years and how social media has evolved, it's hard for us to stay away from it, it's hard for young players who come into the game not to be affected, and I think it's hard for them not to look at social media. ”
"I know as a young player, that's the first thing you do: you come out of the game and you want to see what people are saying about you. When you strip it all out, in reality, it doesn't really matter what they say because they don't choose the lineup. ”
