Xinhua News Agency Nicosia, March 15 (Reporter Zhang Zhang) Cyprus Bird Union said on the 15th that last autumn an estimated 2 million birds of various kinds were killed in Cyprus.
The Cyprus Bird Union survey found that last autumn there were a total of 19 km of bird-catching nets in the two most foraging and activity areas in eastern Cyprus, but significantly fewer than the previous year. In addition, authorities confiscated more than 5,300 sticky sticks for bird catching last year.
Located at the crossroads of three continents in Asia, Europe and Africa, Cyprus is a transit point for migratory bird migration in Europe, North Africa and West Asia. Birds killed include black-capped warblers, sparrows, and robins.
Cyprus has also taken a number of measures to stop residents from preying on birds. In view of the fact that the local population has not yet been able to completely end the practice of predation on birds, the Cypriot government has submitted to the European Union a plan for the "selective killing" of specific species of birds. But the EU says EU regulations prohibit any form of bird hunting.
According to the International Federation of Birds, 25 million birds are killed in the Mediterranean region every year, and among the 20 most affected areas of the killing problem include the Famagusta region in eastern Cyprus.
