【Synopsis】

The story begins with a high-tech food and genetic engineering company in the United States that was previously notorious for environmental protection and animal protection. After new CEO Lucy Mirando (Tilda Swinton) took over the company, they decided to change their business strategy, announcing that they had bred a breed of "super pigs" through a non-GMO technology and sent ten pigs around the world, asking local farmers to use all-natural breeding methods to raise these "super pigs" and compete a decade later.

Miko

One of the "super pigs" is "Tamako", which was sent to a farmer's home in the mountains in South Korea, where a 14-year-old girl named Miko and her grandfather lived together in this small village. After ten years together, Miko and Tamako became inseparable good friends.

And Tamako has also grown into a super pig weighing six tons, looking a bit like a hippopotamus. Suddenly, one day, the people of the food company arrive at Miko's house, and Tamako is dragged back to the New York headquarters without warning, and she will face the fate of being slaughtered and processed into ham.

In order to save Tamako, Miko and the people of the food company came to the United States.

A poster of Memories of a Killing

Of course, the main reason why the movie "Yuzi" has attracted attention is because of director Bong Joon-ho. I don't think any movie lover will miss his classic crime suspense film Memories of Killing. Bong Joon-ho is an excellent genre film director, taking into account the artistic value while not losing entertainment, just like his subsequent "Han River Monster", "Mother", "Snow Country Train" are quite wonderful films.

And the broadcast of some "Jade" can also be described as unprecedented, and the movie chooses to be broadcast directly on the official website of Netflix, without going through the theater. As a result, the film caused great controversy after it was shortlisted for the Palme d'Or.

Looking at the synopsis alone, many people will think that this is a movie with animal protection themes. Therefore, the Douban score of this film is only less than 7 points, and it should be known that Bong Joon-ho's other films are about 8 points.

But in my opinion, if you look at "Jade" from this perspective, it is really a bit of a small look at Bong Joon-ho.

CEO of a food company

Because in addition to the ugly food companies in the film, there is also a very important folk animal protection organization, which aims to expose the true face of Mirando Food Company and protect those animals facing slaughter. But in the film, their image is not a hero, but a funny and even somewhat stupid "Virgin White Lotus".

For example, one of the members almost fainted from starvation during the rescue operation because he did not eat tomatoes ripened with ethylene; one member sacrificed tamako for the so-called "save the animal" operation, but in fact no animal was saved because of their actions; and the person who violently opposed him because of a concealment of his companion.

The little brother who was starved

In the end, it was not the masses, nor the animal protection organizations, nor the food companies that saved Tamako. Instead, Miko used a golden pig and bought the jade that was about to be slaughtered. How ironic! The so-called feelings and morals are not as practical as a transaction in the end.

And Miko is almost the only positive image in this film, she does not understand business, does not understand animal protection, she only knows the firm and brave protection of her good friend "Tamako". What the director wants to explore is probably whether the relationship between people and animals in real society is based on practical values, feelings, or feelings.

Finally, I remembered the story of "Gentleman's Distant Kitchen" in Mencius, human beings can have pity for the cattle and sheep waiting to be slaughtered in front of them, but they can be cruel to the same kind, to those who can't see the living, is this kind of compassion a kind of hypocrisy?
