The source is the flower and root of calendula of the Asteraceae family. Flowers and roots are harvested in autumn or spring in the second year, freshly used or dried for later use.

It is an annual or older herb in its original form, 33 to 48 cm tall, with short hairs throughout the plant. The stem has longitudinal ridges. The leaves are alternate, 2.2 to 7.8 cm long, delicate, inverted ovate, pale green, and petiole-free. Cephalic inflorescence, 3.3 to 7.8 cm in diameter; heterosexual, radial; marginal flower tongue, 1 to 2 columns, yellow or orange, disc flowers are not solid; total bracts are broad, bracts 1 to 2 columns. The fruit is bald and has no crown hair.

It is cultivated in Sichuan, Guizhou, Guangxi, Guangdong, Fujian and other places.

The chemical composition of the flower contains about 3% of carotenoids, including tomato hydrocarbons, butterfly sedanin, buttermixanthin, jade red xanthin, etc.; it also contains about 0.02% volatile oil, about 3.44% resin, about 4% mucus, about 6.84% malic acid, pentaacic acid, trace amount of salicylic acid, a small amount of alkaloids and enzymes with an organic substance. The root contains triterpene saponins. The aerial part contains bitter taste, saponin composed of oleanolic acid and glucuronic acid, triterpene component arnica glycol, etc.; it also contains about 6.45% tannin. The seeds contain fatty oils, mainly glycerol of lauric acid and palmitic acid; their non-saponific part contains wax alcohols and sterols, and also contains alkaloids.

Pharmacological effects of flowers and leaves have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects, especially for staphylococcus and streptococcus. Its antibacterial components are soluble in alcohol but not in water. In alkaline environments, the effect is better. Animal tests have proved that flower extract has a sedative effect on the central nervous system and reduces reflex excitability; intravenous injection can cause a decrease in blood pressure, enhance heart activity, increase the amplitude of the heartbeat, slow down the heart rate, promote the secretion of bile in dogs, and accelerate wound healing. European folk external for skin, mucous membranes of various inflammations, but also can be taken internally to treat various inflammations and ulcers (such as gastric and duodenal ulcers, gastritis, hepatobiliary diseases, etc.). It is used for gastrointestinal cancer to alleviate symptoms of poisoning, improve appetite, sleep, etc., and is also used for menstrual irregularities. Tinctures had a killing effect on the virus in test tubes, but no therapeutic effect was shown for viral pneumonia produced by mice with A2 Frunze flu virus. Aqueous extracts of leaves have the effect of accelerating blood clotting (shortening of thrombin meta-time), but this is related to the tannins and calcium salts contained in it.

Mild and flat sexual taste.

Function indications: line qi and activate blood. Flower: Cool blood, stop bleeding.

Compound (1) to treat stomach cold pain: calendula fresh root one to two two. Serve fried in water or wine or water.

(2) Cure hernia: calendula fresh root two to four two. Serve fried in wine and water.

(3) Cure the symptomatic fistula: calendula dried root one to two two. Serve fried in wine and water.
