Pond herons are the most colorful of heron birds, so they are very popular. I can't be an exception. Another reason I love the pond heron is that it was the second heron bird I focused on observing, the first was the yellow-billed egret I observed in 2004, I was enchanted by the elegance of the yellow-billed egret, but when I first started observing the pond heron, I was attracted by its rich plumage.
Pond herons are adult birds
The average person thinks that the observation of pond herons must go to wetlands and pond heron breeding sites, but in fact, there is no need to go so far, and there are many pond herons at the No. 6 migratory bird observation station located in the center of the city. The only unfortunate thing is that more than 90% of the pond herons observed here are sub-adults. The reason is simple: the adult pond heron came to Dalian during the migration period and hurried to the breeding ground to complete the mission of succession, only the sub-adults were still carefree children, wandering in all directions, and where there was food, they stopped wherever they were. The No. 6 Migratory Bird Observatory is rich in small fish and shrimp, so it always makes these gluttonous ghosts linger.

It's fun to watch them breed in pond heron breeding grounds, but it's rare to see them foraging. At The Migratory Bird Observatory No. 6, most of the sub-adults can be seen, but you can admire their ridiculous form of fishing and shrimp catching. They mostly stand on the water's edge, cautiously entering the village like a ghost, giving people the feeling of a thief's head and a thief's brain, perhaps because I have done law enforcement work, anyway, every time I watch them forage, I immediately think of thieves.

Some migratory bird observers are tired of the noise of pond herons, but I am interested, I like to be quiet, and I like to see the vitality that life shows. Especially when the pond herons catch small fish and shrimp that even ordinary kingfishers are small and eat with relish, I often can't help but laugh out loud when the laugh point is too low.

Pond heron is not the most common heron bird at the No. 6 migratory bird observatory, the most common is the green heron, but different birds have different characteristics, green heron is interesting, pond heron is also interesting, as long as they are there, the original boring migratory bird observation work is not lonely. Today there are really not many migratory birds, only ordinary suzaku, gray-headed bunting, northern gray crane, yellow-waisted willow warbler, extreme northern willow warbler, giant-billed willow warbler and thick-billed reed warbler, but due to the noise of the pond herons, as well as the disturbance of the three big landlords (magpies, gray magpies and red-billed blue magpies), the observatory has always been birdsong, bird shadows are chaotic.
