Infantino: The Qatar World Cup will be the safest in history, thanks to WHO for its support

FiFA official website said that FIFA, the World Health Organization and Qatar have launched a new long-term cooperation to promote the 2022 Qatar World Cup as a synonym for promoting physical and mental health, which also indicates that it may become a model for future major sporting events.

The "World Cup of Health 2022 – Creating a Legacy for Sport and Health", announced at WHO Headquarters in Geneva, will carry out a range of health and safety-related activities. FIFA President Infantino thanked WHO and Qatar for their commitment to a trilateral partnership, saying next year's World Cup in Qatar would be the safest ever.

Infantino said: "Our most iconic match, the World Cup, will be held in Qatar in more than a year, which will be the largest World Cup ever made. However, whether we can enjoy this feast depends on our health. This tripartite partnership is a very important step, and for FIFA, the World Health Organization and Qatar, they are committed to making this World Cup not only the largest, but also the safest ever. ”

"And, under WHO's guidance, we look forward to developing more initiatives and developing new ways to ensure that everyone can enjoy every moment of the World Cup – and that everything is done in an environment that promotes a blend of health, safety and well-being." On behalf of FIFA, I am pleased to help achieve our common goals and look forward to the fruits of this new partnership. ”

WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus thanked FIFA: "I am very grateful to Infantino and our friends at FIFA. Together, we have joined a series of joint initiatives to promote the well-being of all and to advocate for the fight against COVID-19 through public health measures. We are pleased to further strengthen this relationship through this high-level statement of cooperation between Qatar, FIFA and WHO. Our common goal is to host a safe and healthy World Cup in Qatar next year, while also creating a legacy to be left behind, showcasing how major sporting events can be used to promote health and well-being. ”

Ivorian star Drogba has been awarded a WHO Goodwill Ambassador for Health and Sport. Drogba, a former UNDP Goodwill Ambassador who has focused on Africa's development for nearly 15 years, said he was delighted to be back in the UN family.

Drogba said: "Throughout my life, I have been using my sporting career to support difficult areas. That is why I set up the Didier-Drogba Foundation to provide financial and material support in health and education to the most difficult regions of Africa. But that wasn't enough for me. Many people do not have access to health care, while noncommunicable diseases such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer are on the rise globally. As a WHO Goodwill Ambassador for Health and Sport, I am determined to work with WHO, FIFA, civil society, youth, private companies and other stakeholders to reach as many fans as possible. ”
