The airport was built in 1967 and put into military use in 1968. Commercial operations began in 1978. Its military establishment was abolished in 1998 and modernized in 2008.

<h1>Fifth stop: Mangarewa Island</h1>
Mangarewa Island in the Gambir Archipelago of French Polynesia is the fifth stop on the way to Pitcairn, with a 1-hour ferry ride from Totegi Island to Mangareva Island.
From about the 10th to the 15th century, thousands of people lived on the island of Mangarewa. Excessive deforestation has led to the complete destruction of the vegetation of Mangarewa Island, and environmental changes have had disastrous economic and livelihood consequences.
