As the most widely participated and highest-level comprehensive photography art exhibition in Shanghai, Shanghai Photography Art Exhibition has become a common stage for all Shanghai photographers. The 198 excellent photographic works that are being exhibited in the exhibition hall of the Literary and Art Hall try to answer these three questions: In the new era, why, what and how to shoot photography?
This year's Municipal Film Festival has four categories: documentary (including long-term attention unit), art, creativity and business, and multimedia, and uses four-color exhibition halls to divide the space. From its launch on July 19 to the deadline on August 30, the City Film Festival received a total of 4,115 works from 1,002 photographers, nearly 9,000 works, and finally 198 outstanding works were included in the exhibition. These works embody the creative enthusiasm and creative wisdom of photographers in the city, and show us the infinite imagination and original tension of photographic art in a true, flexible, simple and elegant way.

Touch the depths of your soul
The gold medal in the documentary category, "I hugged my mother with my heart", vividly told the scene of the mother and daughter getting along. The grinding of the years turned into countless deep and shallow ravines on her mother's face, like the veins of autumn leaves that were withering. The author uses the camera to record the life and labor scenes of the old mother, a true feeling collides with the soul, and a past ripples... The work uses the narrative technique of objective recording and the visual perception of local close-ups, highlighting the authenticity and social attributes of documentary works.
Gorky said that all the glory and pride in the world comes from the mother. Pan Renfang, the author of this group of works, sighed that as a daughter, she loved her mother deeply and wanted to write her mother into the essay of the impermanent years with the lens. Mothers are a representative of social development, and the excellent character of hard work, kindness, frugality and happiness embodied in their generation has always influenced, impregnated, and guided future generations to behave and do things.
Only by paying more attention to the hometown, paying attention to the surroundings, paying attention to the people and things that are most familiar, and using affection and care, can it be possible to create more moving works. Dai Zhuhui, a gold medalist in the art category, brought his work "Lane Strange Street Corner", taken in Qingpu Old Town from 2017 to 2020. Perhaps she likes this freedom but is full of nostalgia, and her works are inseparable from her hometown Qingpu.
Byron wrote in his poem that we no longer roam together and spend this deep night, even though the heart is still infatuated, even though the moonlight is still so brilliant. Many photographers' works contain similar feelings, this local complex is even more surging under the moonlight, and it also finds a way to show it like a short flower in the roaming of the streets and alleys.
Trace the city's veins
The silver medal in the long-term attention category, "Under the Eaves of Shanghai", which took 8 years to shoot, tells us the scene of the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government renovating the old area of the second-level old houses and dangerous houses in Yangpu District after entering the 21st century. The 20 vivid and real group pictures record the urban scene of Shanghai in the form of black and white shadow tones, which are about to disappear from the streets of Pingliang, Daqiao, Dinghai and Jiangpu in Yangpu District, and record the daily life of residents living under the eaves of Shikumen. The bronze medal in the documentary category, "The Former Small Fishing Village and Now the Big Seaport", has also been traced from 2003 to 2020, recording the century's dream of building the "Oriental Grand Port" of Yangshan DeepWater Port.
Another successful case of old reform, Hongzhen Old Street, is of great historical, humanistic and architectural value. About 20 years ago, photographer Xu Haifeng attended the opening ceremony of the fourth photography correspondence class in Shanghai, and the teacher said, "You have to photograph the familiar things around you", and since then he has focused his lens on the "Hongzhen Old Street" where he lives. Xu Haifeng reminded himself that he should not do nostalgia or nostalgia, but focus on the changes in the hearts of small and medium-sized people in the big era. In 2009, when Laojie began to move, he concentrated on taking many photos and doing oral histories of more than 30 relocated households. By the time of the Spring Festival in 2018, Hongzhen Old Street was almost demolished, at this time, together with the team of the surging news, he stationed and filmed for more than 7 months, and finally formed 51 videos and articles, on this basis, made an interactive product - Hongzhen Old Street H5, which won the gold award in the multimedia category.
Capture the moments
On the occasion of the centenary of the founding of the Party, this exhibition was held, and documentary photographic works such as "A Great Memorial Hall of the Communist Party of China, Built and Opened the Full Record" were also exhibited in the works. The art gold medal "The International Space Station Through the Moon" presents Bresson's "decisive moment" shooting. As an astronaut, Zeng Chengyu used high-speed continuous shooting to completely record the process of crossing the moon on the International Space Station with only 0.52 seconds at an accurate time and place.
There is no end to it
The most basic criterion for judging whether a photo is good or bad is, are you willing to let it hang in your living room? It is true that photography can be an expression of personal emotions and thoughts, but ultimately it has to be hung on the wall. As a biennial municipal exhibition, the works exhibited in this Shanghai Photography Art Exhibition represent the high level of urban photography at present. Among them, there are naturally some works that are fiercely discussed by the judges, some of which are finally hung in the eye-catching place because of the pleasing decoration, and some of the best works the judges also hope to be able to put it bigger, but unfortunately because of cutting and other reasons, the size is limited by the pixels...
It can be said that "display" is not the ultimate purpose of this art exhibition, but hopes that through this exhibition, all photography enthusiasts and professional photographers will be invited, and the best works will always be worth looking forward to next time. This art exhibition, this carefully arranged exhibition hall, is to tell everyone that good works will be discovered and cherished, and the C position of the exhibition hall will always be left to the attentive photographers and the works with hearts.
