Tengchong is located on the western slope of the southern section of Gaoligong Mountain, with its unique geographical location and excellent natural environment, providing a better living space for butterflies, and tengchong has recorded more than 200 kinds of butterflies. The butterfly composition is dominated by species from the Himalayas and the mountainous regions of southwestern Yunnan.
Tengchong's representative butterfly species include Tibetan salient butterfly, window butterfly, multi-tailed phoenix butterfly, Tibetan haiku butterfly, etc., among which there are more unique butterfly species in the Gaoligong Mountain Range - Gaoligong tail butterfly. In addition, some tropical species from the Irrawaddy River Plain also visit the Tengchong area at any time, which together constitute the diverse butterfly phase of Tengchong, making Tengchong one of the most abundant areas of butterflies.

According to the Regulations of the People's Republic of China on Nature Reserves, the core area of the protected area is prohibited from entering; those who go to the experimental area of the protected area need to apply for a mountain entry permit at the management agency of the protected area, and can enter the mountain after the competent forestry department handles the mountain entry permit. If visitors wish to go to the reserve for nature observation, please go to the Tengchong Protected Area Administration in advance to apply.
