Born in Bamako, Mali in 1980, Sedou Keita played as a defender in Ligue 1 side Marseille. In the 2002 season, Keita joined Ligue 1 side Lens, where he ushered in a career transformation. As captain, he scored 11 goals for the team in 2006–07, the most goalscored season of his career, and led Lens to the round of 16 of the League Cup. In 2007, Monchi took Keita to Spain for just 4 million euros to join Sevilla, which made him truly famous. After just one season at Sevilla, Keita was spotted by La Liga giants Barcelona.
In the 2008 season, Barca triggered the termination clause, bringing Keita to Catalonia for 14 million euros, and he became the first Malian to play for Barca. In July 2012, Chinese Super League side Albin FC officially announced the signing of Sedou Keita, and the two sides signed a two-and-a-half-year contract. After joining Albin, under the pass control system of Stano, Keita quickly integrated into the team and became the absolute core of the team, cooperating with Utaca and Yu Dabao in the front court. Keita scored four goals in 11 appearances that season, helping Albin, who had once hovered in the relegation zone, to 5th in the league. Due to turmoil within the team in the 2013 season, successive coach changes have also affected Keita's form.
