"The story of Daisy comes from wondering if robots dream." Yu Yu said

Yu Yu, 28, has just graduated from USC, and her graduation work "Daisy" recently won the 45th Student Academy Awards, the third "Puppet animation" she produced during her studies at USC.

"Daisy" tells that during the war, a little girl's robot is living a happy life in a house, one day, the air raid suddenly came, the robot fled with the little girl in a hurry, but on the way because of accidental damage, it let the little girl escape on her own, and then entered a coma (standby) state. After a long time, the robot woke up again, and it found that the surrounding environment had changed stars, and it began to look for the little girl's traces. The way he thought of it was to seize the memory cards of other robots and find the little girl from each other's memories.

Yu Yu is a Taiwanese student who has been shortlisted for the "Student Oscar" again after Zhang Kunyi, Liu Gengming, Ji Baizhou, Guo Yanting, Zu Xiaoyun and You Weizheng.

The Student Oscars were new awards from the Academy of Graphic Arts (AMPAS) in 1972 to encourage university-level creativity. This year's student Oscars have a total of 1582 entries, from 278 universities in the United States and 112 overseas universities, and finally select 15 winners from 7 awards.

Often seen as the first step to success in Hollywood, the award has been a 46-time winner who has been nominated for an Academy Award, such as Spike Lee, who won a lifetime achievement award, Robert Zemeckis, South Park director Trey Parker, Bob Saget, director of "School of Horror on the Horse", "School of Horror", bob Saget, director of "Forrest Gump". Toy Story director John Lasseter and others.

This is indeed the reason why Yu Yu came to the United States, "When I was in Taiwan, I didn't read animation, and many times I experimented and made mistakes to know how to do it, and then I decided to go to USC, and I felt that if I wanted to learn, I would learn the best, if the time had to be spent." The advantage of LA here is that the company is here, like my first year here, I have met all the puppet animators I want to meet. Yu Yu said.

On October 11, when Yu Yu stood on the stage, like other winners, he first thanked his family from Taiwan for their support, and then said that the award was an encouragement for independent production.

Daisy is the third puppet animation independently choreographed and directed by Yu Yu when he was studying at USC. In the past, she also produced a lot of puppet animation, but during the creation she found that not many people knew this form of animation, "What surprised me was that at some parties (held after winning the award), there were still people who didn't know much about what puppet animation was, thinking that I was doing it with computer special effects. ”

Puppet animation refers to animation that uses puppet animation, such as clay dolls, puppets, or mixed-material dolls, to perform, usually in stop motion.

Compared with the general CG, Yu Yu loves the effect of the doll animation, "it has its own material and texture, which the computer can't do."

Yu Yu has been making puppet animations for a long time

Yu Yu, a bachelor's degree in philosophy and radio and television at National Chengchi University in Taiwan, said that during this period she learned a lot of practical skills in shooting, and she prefers the effects brought about by changes in photography and light and shadow rather than animation special effects.

"The memories in Daisy are dynamic blurry shots, which I shot with my camera, not post-production, moving the camera while shooting, and I did some experiments to know how to shoot this effect." Yu Yu said.

Yu Yu believes that once the dolls and scenes of the puppet animation are established, there is less need to worry about "perspective" and "shadow" issues, because these will naturally appear in the shooting, and in the past when making CG animation, the most worrying thing was that things looked floaty and had no weight. However, the dolls and objects that are actually made are touchable, so the effect is very dominant in terms of weight, perspective, and shadow.

However, Yu Yu also believes that the relationship between the two is not zero and one, in fact, it is mainly to use the form that he is better at.

After graduating from college, Ms. Yu worked for a small production company in Taiwan, where they animated one-minute puppets in each episode for a children's show on public television, Fruit Ice Cream. She spent about two and a half years at the company, working on different animations with two puppeteers, but during this time she also began to find herself limited by lack of skills.

After arriving at USC, she mainly focused on puppet animation, and in addition to Daisy, she also created two other puppet animations, Voyant and Play House.

The three stories are not the same, but neither of them is out of the framework of desire and addiction.

In the case of "Play House", the story tells that a family of four eats together one day, but there is no expression between each other, there is nothing to say, just take care of their own meals, and the father who is sliding the mobile phone sees the family portrait on the social network, everyone is smiling, and forces the smiley face mask to put on the family, in order to take a "happy" family portrait.

"I've always wanted to talk about addiction well, I think Daisy is still a little too complicated, in fact, a lot of times people want things that are simple, but the methods are often cruel. I just want to talk about a common human issue. Yu Yu said.

The most exciting plot twist in "Daisy" is that if a robot has desires because of pure motives, it may also do many cruel things.

In terms of animated short films, "Daisy" does take a little longer, nearly ten minutes, "Usually as long as the story is more than five minutes, the teacher will suggest that it be deleted, and this film is faster than ten minutes, if in terms of content, it is a prop that adds a lot of indexes, such as scarves and flowers, which are props used to connect the story." ”

However, Yu also mentioned that despite the eventual use of many indexed props, the story may still be a little more complicated, and she is trying to say one thing more focusedly and concisely.

After graduating, Yu Yu went to the studio of Henry Selick, the director of "Nightmare On Christmas Eve", as an animation assistant and began to join the Hollywood animation process.

Here, each animation is carefully divided into professions. Yu Yu believes that this is the advantage of being prolific and maintaining long-term production.

She also admits that her work was influenced by Henry Selick, "after all, he was the first director to create a puppet animated feature film."

However, Yu Yu next plans to return to Taiwan and create more puppet animations by taking over the case.

Based on past experience, she believes that Asian owners don't know much about dual animation, but it is a good opportunity to expand. The next puppet animation she is planning will be set in Taiwan, with the protagonists revolving around elementary school students.
