Geng Shuang, China's Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations: The United States has a bad record in arbitrary detention

United Nations, 26 Oct (Xinhua) -- Geng Shuang, Deputy Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations, pointed out in his speech at the video side meeting on arbitrary detention during the 76th International Law Week of the Un-General Assembly on 26 October that the United States has a bad record in arbitrary detention, and the Meng Wanzhou incident is a typical arbitrary detention.

Geng Shuang said that arbitrary detention tramples on human rights and the rule of law, and arbitrary detention of citizens of other countries mostly involves the indiscriminate imposition of unilateral sanctions and "long-arm jurisdiction.", and the use of arbitrary detention to exert pressure on other countries is even more a violation of the basic principles of international law such as sovereign equality and non-interference in internal affairs and the basic norms governing international relations. China resolutely opposes arbitrary detention, resolutely opposes the adoption of double standards on the issue of arbitrary detention, and resolutely opposes political manipulation and indiscriminate unilateral bullying on the issue of arbitrary detention.

He said that when we talk about arbitrary detention, we cannot talk about the bad deeds of the United States in this regard. The United States has long held a large number of suspects in the infamous Guantanamo prison, some of whom have been detained indefinitely without legal process and continue to be tortured and ill-treated. The United States has also arbitrarily detained innocent immigrants and forcibly separated migrant children from their parents, resulting in the breakdown of countless families.

Geng Shuang said that the Meng Wanzhou incident concocted by the United States is a typical arbitrary detention. Facts have long proved that the allegations of so-called "fraud" against Ms. Meng Wanzhou are pure fabrications. Even HSBC, which was accused by the US side of being a "victim", issued documents sufficient to prove Ms. Meng's innocence. This incident was caused by the unilateral sanctions and "long-arm jurisdiction" imposed by the United States, and is a political persecution of Chinese citizens, which seriously violates the rules and principles of international law respecting human rights, properly exercising national jurisdiction, non-interference in internal affairs, and mutual respect for sovereignty. Canada has also played a very disgraceful role in this. The Canadian side should deeply reflect and learn lessons, instead of politically manipulating the issue of "arbitrary detention" under the banner of discussing legal issues. (End)
