The "green zone" in Baghdad, Iraq, was hit by several rockets

Baghdad, 20 Dec (Xinhua) -- The Iraqi military said on 20 December that the "green zone" in the center of Baghdad, the Iraqi capital, was attacked by several rockets that night. The U.S. Embassy in Iraq activated air defense systems to intercept the rockets.

The Iraqi Joint Operations Command issued a statement saying that unidentified armed personnel fired several Katyusha rockets from the southeastern region of Baghdad to the "Green Zone" on the evening of the 20th, hitting some buildings and vehicles in the "Green Zone", but did not cause casualties.

An official of the Iraqi Interior Ministry said in an interview with Xinhua news agency that the air defense system of the US Embassy intercepted and destroyed four rockets that night, and another rocket hit a military facility in the "green zone."

The U.S. Embassy in Iraq issued a statement on the same day saying that the embassy's defense system intervened in the rocket attack, which caused minor damage to some of the embassy's facilities and no casualties.

No organization or individual has yet claimed to have committed the attack.

Located in the center of Baghdad, the "Green Zone" is home to Iraqi government agencies and the U.S. and British embassies in Iraq. Similar attacks against the "green zone" occur from time to time.
