Born in 1931 in Xinghua, Jiangsu Province, Zhang Taofang joined the Chinese People's Liberation Army in 1951 and entered the Korean War in September 1952.
Throughout the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea, Zhang Taofang killed 214 enemies with 436 rounds of ammunition in 32 days, creating the highest record for the volunteer army to kill the enemy with cold guns in the Korean battlefield, and was known as "volunteer sharpshooter", "cold gun hero", and "Shangganling sniper god".
