On August 6th, the 2021 Hangzhou Botanical Garden Stone Garlic Exhibition of "Flowers blooming on the other side, Splendid Hangzhou Planting" sponsored by Hangzhou Botanical Garden of West Lake Xixi Scenic Area (Hangzhou West Lake Garden Science Research Institute) kicked off at the Yuquan Yuyue Scenic Spot in the park.

This year's stone garlic flower exhibition is divided into a natural display area of ground-planted stone garlic and a display area of fine stone garlic. The stone garlic natural landscape area includes economic plant areas, classification areas, Qinglong Mountain, Yuquan and other areas, with more than 20 varieties including Kudi Smile, Rose Stone Garlic, Changing Brocade Flower, Straw Stone Garlic, Chinese Stone Garlic, etc., and planting seed balls up to one million plants.
Since August, large areas of stone garlic flowers have been in full bloom, and on the green slopes of the mountains, under the lush shade of the trees, next to the babbling stream, there are abundant stone garlic flowers everywhere. Stepping into the garden, the breeze is gentle, and the light and graceful stone garlic flowers dance, showing a graceful and elegant posture.
In addition to the natural landscape, this year, the Hangzhou Botanical Garden also arranged a stone garlic boutique exhibition area in the Yuquan Yuyue Scenic Spot, displaying stone garlic varieties and bonsai potted plants.
On both sides of yuquan fish pond, using the high and low Chinese Bogu shelves and several shelves, a rich layer of booths were arranged, exhibiting more than 50 pots of 12 varieties of stone garlic, 8 pots of large bonsai, more than 20 pots of pocket bonsai, mountain weeds, several pots of fine Guolan and a variety of summer flowering plants, creating a beautiful and elegant flower viewing atmosphere.
More than ten original species and varieties of stone garlic plants, including long-barreled stone garlic, red blue stone garlic and sudden laughter, are exhibited here, including all the original stone garlic species collected by the national stone garlic plant germplasm resource bank of the botanical garden, as well as the new excellent varieties selected and bred by the stone garlic plant research team after years of hard work, as well as the excellent stone garlic varieties that the botanical garden participated in the 2019 Beijing World Horticultural Exposition and won ten awards, which fully demonstrated the latest scientific research achievements of the Hangzhou Botanical Garden in the selection and breeding of stone garlic varieties.
In addition, the exhibition also set up a popular science exhibition board about the knowledge of the stone garlic family and the stone garlic plant, which is convenient for tourists to learn.
The fine exhibition area of this stone garlic flower exhibition will be exhibited until August 16, and the natural landscape of stone garlic in the park will last until September.

It is understood that since the end of the 1970s, Hangzhou Botanical Garden has begun to carry out introduction cultivation, breeding and application promotion of bulbous root flowers, and has been studied for decades in depth and meticulously, especially in the cross breeding of stone garlic.
After nearly 50 years of accumulation and construction, hardware facilities such as stone garlic scientific research garden and cultivation and fast breeding have gradually been completed, and full-time technical workers have been equipped for daily maintenance and management. In recent years, the research content has been further deepened and expanded, covering introductory cultivation, hybrid breeding, rapid breeding and physiological biochemistry.
In the past ten years, the research team of the Botanical Garden has collected and preserved nearly 100 germplasm resources from 17 provinces across the country through field investigation and introduction and germplasm resource exchange, and introduced and donated some foreign varieties. At present, Hangzhou Botanical Garden has preserved a total of 24 species of stone garlic plants, more than 100 germplasm resources, and was awarded the provincial and first batch of national stone garlic plant germplasm resource banks in Zhejiang Province in 2016 and 2017 respectively.
Zhang Pengchong, senior engineer of Hangzhou Botanical Garden and director of the Research and Development Center for Scientific and Technological Achievements, is the main member of the team, he told the "China Flower News" reporter that due to the long growth cycle of stone garlic seeds, the low fruiting rate of hybrid offspring, asexual reproduction has become the main technical means for the expansion of stone garlic, and the team has created a "base cutting drying method" with high pelletization rate and large reproductive coefficient.

He also said that tissue culture is the only way for the industrial production of stone garlic species balls, and the botanical garden has successively established a system method of rapid propagation of red blue stone garlic, fragrant stone garlic and new varieties of 'peach red' stone garlic, and applied for relevant patents, and appropriately expanded the new excellent varieties screened out, laying a foundation for industrial production and application.
