Anhui University (Anhui University) was founded in April 1928, located in Hefei, Anhui Province, by the Ministry of Education, the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense and the People's Government of Anhui Province jointly built a provincial key comprehensive university, a national "double first-class" world-class discipline construction university, and a "211 Project" key construction university. It was established on the basis of Hefei University and the former Department of Physics of Anhui University.
In May 1897, Qiushi Academy was established in Anqing, Anhui.
In November 1901, Qiushi Academy merged with Jingshi College and was renamed Anhui University Hall.
In 1902, it was renamed Anhui Higher School.
In 1911, the school was closed.
In 1928, Anhui University was founded in Anqing, then the provincial capital.
During the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the school was forced to move westward and was once closed. After the victory of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression in 1945, Anhui University was re-established in Anqing City and named National Anhui University. Famous scholars such as Yao Yongpu, Liu Wendian, Wang Xinggong, Cheng Yansheng, Tao Yin, Chen Wangdao, Ding Xuxian, Yu Dafu, Zhou Yutong, Lü Simian, Zhang Yi, and Zhou Jianren have all taught or presided over anhui university administration.
In December 1949, it moved to Wuhu City, merged with Anhui College, and restored its name to Anhui University.
In 1952, after the ideological reform movement, the Anhui Provincial Party Committee decided to move Anhui University to the provincial capital city of Hefei. To this end, the school set up an infrastructure construction leading group, and quickly sent Xu Liancheng and Zhu Shixiong as the main and deputy section chiefs of the infrastructure work team to Hefei to engage in the capital construction of the new school.

In 1954, the national colleges and universities were adjusted, some departments and departments of Anhui University were transferred to the relevant colleges and universities in East China, and at the same time, some departments were transferred, and two colleges of teacher training and agronomy were set up, and in February 1954, the specialized Anhui Agricultural College (now Anhui Agricultural University) and Anhui Normal College (now Anhui Normal University) were independently established, and the establishment of Anhui University was abolished.
In 1958, the infrastructure team sent by the former Anhui University was completed to build a new school outside the West Gate of Hefei. The provincial party committee originally planned to move Anhui Normal College to a new site in Hefei to run the school, but due to the changes and needs of the development of the situation, the provincial party committee decided that the normal college would remain in Wuhu and build another "Hefei University" in the new school in Hefei, with Zeng Xisheng and president. It was also decided to move the Department of Physics, the main department of Anhui Normal University, into Hefei University, leaving only a few teachers to continue to prepare a new Department of Physics in Wuhu. Other departments, including Chinese, foreign languages, history, geography, mathematics, biology, chemistry and other departments, only a few backbone teachers plus some of the school's management cadres were selected to Hefei University.
On July 5, 1958, the Seventh Meeting of the State Council decided that Zeng Xisheng would concurrently serve as the president of Hefei University, and Zhang Xingyan and Sun Taolin would serve as vice presidents. On July 21, the provincial party committee decided to establish the party committee of Hefei University, with Zhang Xingyan as secretary and Fang Zhiming, former political commissar of the Nanjing Military Region Normal School of the People's Liberation Army, as the first deputy secretary. On September 16 of the same year, Chairman Mao came to Hefei to inspect and inscribed the name of Anhui University. Anhui University was one of the few universities where Comrade Mao Zedong wrote the name of the university in his own handwriting.
History of the school
In 1993, in response to the strategic deployment of the Party Central Committee and the State Council, the Anhui Provincial Party Committee and the Anhui Provincial Government decided to focus on supporting Anhui University to enter the national "211 Project" under the specific organizational leadership and strong support of the State Planning Commission and the Ministry of Education.
In 1996, Anhui University passed the pre-examination of the "211 Project" department.
In December 1997, the school officially became a national "211 Project" key university, and is also the second "211 Project" key university in Anhui Province after the University of Science and Technology of China.
In 1998, it was approved by the provincial government to implement the "211 Project" construction project, and in the same year, Li Peng, Qiao Shi and other comrades personally wrote inscriptions congratulating the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the school.
In 1999, it was approved as a "211 Project" project institution in the country for construction.
In 2000, the former Anhui Bank School and Anhui Finance School were merged into Anhui University.
In June 2001, on the basis of completing the construction tasks of the "Ninth Five-Year Plan" and "211 Project" as scheduled, it successfully passed the acceptance of the overall national project. In the same year, Comrade Wen Jiabao cordially received Comrade He Jiaqing, a teacher at the "National Top Ten Poverty Alleviation Champions".
On November 7, 2002 and September 17, 2003, the feasibility study report of the "Tenth Five-Year" and "211 Project" construction projects and the "Equipment Purchase Plan" of the school passed the project approval review of the expert group of the Ministry of Education and the inspection and evaluation of the expert group of the China International Engineering Consulting Corporation of the State Planning Commission. On December 28, the groundbreaking ceremony of the 2,000-acre Lingyuan Campus was held and began to move in in 2004.

In June 2004, the school's "Feasibility Study Report on the Construction Project of the Tenth Five-Year Plan" and "211 Project" was approved by the National Development and Reform Commission, and the "Tenth Five-Year" and "211 Project" construction projects were officially approved for construction in the country.
In June 2006, it successfully passed the acceptance of the overall project of the national "Tenth Five-Year Plan" and "211 Project".
In November 2007, the school passed the undergraduate teaching level assessment of the Ministry of Education with excellent results.
In August 2013, the document signed by the Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Anhui Province on jointly building Anhui University was officially issued. According to the co-construction agreement, the Ministry of Education will incorporate the development and construction of Anhui University into the overall plan for the development of higher education in the country, and give equal treatment to directly affiliated universities.
In July 2014, it was rated by the Ministry of Education as a typical experience university for graduate employment in China.

In September 2017, it was selected into the list of national "double first-class" world-class discipline construction universities. In November, the school was rated as the first national civilized campus.
In March 2018, it was selected as one of the first batch of "new engineering" research and practice projects of the Ministry of Education. [4]
In December 2018, Anhui University became a university jointly established by the People's Government of Anhui Province and the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense. [1]
In April 2020, the Ministry of Education approved Anhui University and the State University of New York at Stony Brook to jointly organize the "Stony Brook College of Anhui University", which is the first Non-independent Legal Person-type Sino-foreign cooperative educational institution approved by Anhui Province. In October, it was identified by the State Intellectual Property Office and the Ministry of Education as the national intellectual property pilot university in 2020. [2]
