Because of its rich category and bright colors, since the Ming and Qing dynasties, Lingnan painters have entered the topic with this, and the best works have been seen. The method of "hitting water and hitting powder" advocated by Juchao and Julian in the late Qing Dynasty is to use Lingnan fruits such as lychees, mangoes, bergamots, star fruit, etc. as the object of depiction, to open up a new style of modern Lingnan flower and bird painting, and to influence Guangdong for nearly a hundred years. To this day, the subject of vegetables and fruits is still enjoyed by painters.

According to the Northern Song Dynasty's "Xuanhe Painting Spectrum", it can be known that the earliest painter to paint vegetables and fruits was Gu Yewang of the Chen Kingdom during the Southern and Northern Dynasties, whose heirloom works include "Grass Worm Diagram", the Middle Tang Dynasty Bianluan painting the Silla Kingdom Tribute Peacock Dance and Camellia, Vegetables and Fruits, and the Late Tang Dynasty Diao Guangyin as a flower and bird is even more famous, of which the greatest influence on flower and bird painting, its "perversion of poor feathers, the fangyan of the flowers" has a greater influence on the five generations of Huang Tsuen. In the fifth generation, Huang Tsuen and Xu Xuan rose together, and the materials for flower and bird paintings were more extensive, and garden vegetables, puzao, etc. began to be painted, and folded branches and flowers appeared in the composition form.
In the two Song Dynasties, due to the development of court painting, flowers, birds and landscapes flourished, and there were special progress, the achievements of this period far exceeded the previous generation, especially the establishment of the painting academy promoted the development of the painting industry, and many flower and bird paintings also emerged. Including the Northern Song Dynasty Gao Huaibao, Zhao Chang, Yi Yuanji, etc., of which Zhao Chang was famous for a while, Ouyang Xiu once commented on Yun: "Famous paintings in recent times: Li Cheng, Juran Landscape, Bao Dinghu, Zhao Chang Flowers and Fruits." ”
In this regard, Zhu Wanzhang, a research librarian at the National Museum of China, introduced: "The Song Dynasty expressed vegetables and fruits more realistically, and the Ming Dynasty began to have freehand, similar to Xu Wei, his pomegranate is to show a literati interest, showing a spiritual pursuit, while the Song Dynasty is more about sketching scenery." However, in terms of taking fruits as the subject of painting, Zhu Wanzhang introduced: "The performance of vegetables and fruits in Lingnan started relatively late, and only began after the middle and late Qing Dynasty, unlike the Central Plains in the Song Dynasty, which has been mature, and the real peak of development is in the nest of Julian, and since then the inheritance has been orderly, forming a complete system for inheritance." ”
Since the new era, painters with lychees have become more common, and most flower and bird painters can be competent in the creation of lychee paintings. Other lingnan fruit creations are also more common and popular.
It is worth mentioning that in recent years, the Lingnan calligraphy and painting circle has set off a long wave of localization and creation, and one by one representative local customs and humanistic themes have been excavated, from "Hakka Mountain Residence" to "Eight Views of Yangcheng", from "Guangzhou Hundred Flowers" to "Southern Shangdu", all of which are directly related to the spiritual temperament and cultural character of the land of Lingnan, and this Jiaguo special works exhibition is also the embodiment of this trend.
Talking about how contemporary painters differ from the ancients in depicting vegetable and fruit themes, Zhu Wanzhang introduced: "Contemporary painters pay more attention to their texture when depicting vegetables and fruits, and under the influence of Western art techniques, there will be some light and dark perspective space treatment methods. In addition, in the contemporary depictions of vegetables and fruits, most of them are a combination of sketching and freehand, while in ancient times, due to the different chronological stages of realism and freehand, they will be relatively clear. ”
