To improve the quality of urban construction, what to do, what to avoid, and what to enhance? At the 4th Shanshui City Sustainable Development International Forum and the RCEP 1st Design Consulting Industry Summit held in Chongqing recently, a number of industry experts answered questions from different angles when interviewed by reporters.
A walkable city is a good city
"The sidewalk is the capillary of the city, and its quality affects the quality of the whole city." Xu Qianli, secretary of the party committee and chairman of Chongqing Design Group, sighed that in the past, everyone cared about the city's iconic squares and buildings, but did not care much about the "capillaries" general streets that pervaded the city. In fact, this kind of street is the background color of the city, and its quality has a greater impact on the city as a whole than the landmark building.
Recalling a trip to South America many years ago, Xu Qianli said that when he shared the street scene of Buenos Aires with the students, he suddenly found that there was a scene that was rarely seen in the big cities in China — people standing on the street chatting. Everyone was in a hurry to their next destination.
"A walkable city is a good city." Xu Qianli said that in recent years, many scholars have invariably mentioned this view. Now, it is possible to pay attention to the non-daily activities of the city, such as some large scenes and ritual activities, and pay less attention to the content related to daily life. This is also a change brought about by the increasing number of cars, the city from "people-oriented" to "car-oriented", the car as the first consideration, and squeezed the space for people to walk, resulting in the disappearance of some life scenes.
"The city is in the service of people's lives, which is its fundamental function, and special attention must be paid to people's daily activities." Xu Qianli stressed. For example, he said, the green financial avenue from Chongqing's Liberation Monument to Chaotianmen has become more in line with the needs of human activities through the optimization of urban space and the improvement of facilities. More than that, many roads in Chongqing's Yuzhong District are undergoing the same renovation and renewal, returning urban space to citizens to walk.
Net red architecture should be "sustainable"
City influencer buildings or attractions are different and unique. The net red architectural attractions can continue to advance, and may represent the spiritual outlook or development direction of the city at some levels, with a certain transcendence. This is the understanding of Chu Dongzhu, general manager and chief architect of Chongqing Design Institute Co., Ltd., about the internet red architectural attractions.
On more than one occasion, he observed that there were a large number of people pulling suitcases in some of the internet celebrity attractions. Some people stay in online celebrity attractions for no more than 10 minutes, mainly taking a few photos or a video of more than ten seconds, and then spreading to the rest of the world to express their existence; without a long-term, sustained, and immersive experience in one place. And the scene behind these photos may not be able to see at all. This state of communication affects the construction of the city, and too much attention is paid to local and unique angles. Some buildings look the most beautiful from only one angle, and the sides and back may be incompatible with the city.
Chu Dongzhu reminded that when everyone realizes the traffic, economic value, and urban image promotion value brought by the internet celebrity architectural attractions, you can calmly look at the rapid and long-term relationship behind the internet celebrity.
There are still challenges in the application of digital technologies in urban construction
The application of digital technology in urban development, construction, operation and management has received more and more attention from the industry, so what bottlenecks need to be broken at present?
Li Heping, a master of engineering survey and design in Chongqing and secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Architecture and Urban Planning of Chongqing University, analyzed that the field of urban development and construction involves the application of digital technology at three levels.
First, at the level of planning and design, many research institutions are currently exploring CIM technology (urban information model), but the technical standards are not uniform, and it is necessary to take a long way to integrate. At the same time, its application scenarios are few, and the domestic Xiong'an New Area is promoting the application of CIM technology in the whole process, and there are still many difficulties in other cities.
Second, in the implementation stage of the project, countries around the world are promoting the application of BIM technology (building information modeling). The technical specifications, standards and data systems of different research institutions when developing BIM systems are not the same, and it is difficult to integrate. At the same time, the technology is currently less used, and CAD technology is still mainly used in the construction process of the project.
Third, there are also many difficulties in digital technology in urban operation and management, for example, the basic data and technical standards of each unit are different, resulting in difficult integration; for example, the overall framework system and path of application are not very clear.
It is reported that the Shanshui City International Forum has been held for 4 consecutive sessions since 2018, and in the past forums, more than 60 good suggestions and golden ideas have been applied to the construction of Shanshui City in the country. (End)
