This morning we both raised the flag in front of the gate, and suddenly the sea was blowing with a strong wind, blowing our eyes open, but we insisted on patrolling the surroundings of the island and the sea.
In July 1986, Wang Jicai, a 26-year-old militia battalion commander, received orders from the county people's armed forces department to come to Kaishan Island and became the fifth director of the militia post on Kaishan Island.
At that time, There was no water and no electricity on Kaishan Island, and only the fierce sea breeze and the raging mosquitoes were accompanied by it. The night before going to the island, Wang Jicai poured a whole bottle of liquor alone and stayed overnight...
For the next few days, he looked at the sea and thought for a long, long time, and finally, decided to stay, "You don't keep, no one keeps." Later, I thought about it, how difficult is it for the older generation to throw their heads and spill blood, and I crouch here to sacrifice a little? ”
More than a month later, Wang Shihua, who could not trust her husband, resolutely quit her job as a primary school teacher, entrusted her two-year-old daughter to the old man, and volunteered to come to the island as a sentry. In this way, the "militia husband and wife post" on Kaishan Island was officially established.
However, patrolling is not an easy task in the extremely treacherous environment of Kaishan Island.

During the 32 years of guarding the island, Wang Jicai was in danger twice, and 3 ribs were broken. One of them was when the typhoon struck, and he was anxious to retract the national flag, and rolled down 17 steps in the air. Wang Jicai said, "Raising the national flag is to tell the world that this is China's land, and no one should try to bully us!" "If something really happens one day, bury me on the island and let me accompany the flag for the rest of my life!"

In order to guard the island, he missed his daughter's wedding, missed the birth of his grandson, and missed the last face with his old father.
Wang Jicai:
I'm really sorry for my eldest daughter, who didn't study at the age of ten.
Lao Wang said that to keep the island is to defend the country, and national security can be peaceful. We are here to guard, the troops need this place, pick up and use.
In September 2014, Wang Jicai and his wife were awarded the titles of "Jiangsu Era Model" and "National Era Model" by the Propaganda Department of the Jiangsu Provincial Party Committee and the Central Propaganda Department.
On February 11, 2015, before the military and civilians' Spring Festival tea party, Wang Jicai was also cordially met by General Secretary Xi Jinping as a model representative of the national double support. Wang Jicai said excitedly: The general secretary cares so much about us, I will have to guard Kaishan Island well in the future, and keep it until I can't move.
On July 27, 2018, Wang Jicai suddenly fell ill while on duty and died after ineffective rescue, at the age of 58... He fulfilled his promise with his life and fixed his last time on the Island of Kaishan, which he loved.
After the death of Wang Jicai, General Secretary Xi Jinping made an important instruction that we should vigorously advocate this patriotic dedication and make it the value pursuit of strivers in the new era.
On June 18 this year, the movie "Shoudao Man", based on the deeds of Wang Jicai and his wife, was released, and the box office exceeded 100 million yuan in 26 days. The film makes the hero reappear, Wang Jicai's deeds have once again deeply touched countless people, once again inspiring us, as long as there are ideals and beliefs, a person can use persistence and struggle to realize the value of life even in ordinary posts, and the little efforts from everyone can finally gather the majestic power of building a new era of dreams with one heart.
