Kunming, 11 Oct (Xinhua) -- Han Zheng, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and vice premier of the State Council, attended the opening ceremony of the 15th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity in Kunming, Yunnan Province, on 11 October and delivered a speech.
Han Zheng said that China, as one of the countries with the richest biodiversity in the world, has always attached great importance to biodiversity conservation. Under the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Ecological Civilization, China adheres to ecological priority and green development, continuously strengthens ecosystem protection and restoration, comprehensively promotes biodiversity conservation and poverty alleviation, deeply participates in global biodiversity governance, and promotes biodiversity conservation to achieve remarkable results. In the future, China will take greater efforts and more practical measures to promote biodiversity conservation. We will prepare national biodiversity conservation strategies and action plans for the new era, and promote the deep integration and coordinated development of biodiversity conservation and economy and society. Continue to promote major projects for biodiversity conservation, so that important ecosystems, biological species and biological genetic resources can be fully protected. Strengthen publicity, education and knowledge popularization of biodiversity conservation, and guide and drive the general public to actively participate in biodiversity conservation.
Han Zheng said that China is willing to strengthen cooperation and exchanges with all parties, earnestly fulfill the obligations of the host country of the Conference, play a good role as the presidency, promote the conclusion of a comprehensively balanced, strong and enforceable consensus and framework for action, and promote global biodiversity governance to a new level. Han Zheng put forward a three-point proposal to all participants: First, to gather consensus and boost ambition. Adhere to multilateralism, strengthen political promotion and dialogue and exchanges, take the road of both ambition and pragmatism, and scientifically formulate action goals after 2020. The second is to increase investment and mobilize resources. Broaden the channels of financial input to provide greater support for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. The third is to accelerate change and synergy. Priority should be given to biodiversity conservation and effective measures should be taken to promote development and transformation. Strengthen the protection and restoration of nature and ecosystems, and coordinate to address global environmental challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and food security.
The theme of the fifteenth Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity is "Ecological civilization: building a community of life on Earth". More than 5,000 delegates from more than 140 Parties and more than 30 international institutions and organizations participated in the conference through a combination of online and offline methods.
