Set in the Harlem neighborhood of New York in the 1920s, Claire and Irene are light-skinned blacks who can impersonate whites. Growing up, pretty Claire married a wealthy white businessman who had racist ideas but knew nothing about her identity, while Irene married a black doctor.

Since Claire has no friends after pretending to be white, she often takes advantage of her husband's business trips to visit Irene's home, but she develops a good relationship with Irene's husband.
