"Double Detective" has two main timelines and involves three cases. In 2017, Li Huiyan, a criminal police officer in Beijing, and Zhou You, a former surgeon who worked as a mortician, came to the twin towers of the northeastern border town of Shuangta to track down the kidnappers and track down the truth about their father's murder. Clues from the two cases intersect to point to an old case of the destruction of a double-tower forest farm disguised as a firefighting site 26 years ago. Another reason for the misunderstanding, Fei Yuzhu believes that it is the first three scenes in the opening chapter, only the first one uses subtitles to explain "Spring 1991", and the other two scenes are not marked with time. Many viewers thought that the third scene in Beijing's hutongs also took place in the 1990s. Chen Zhufei also said that if Li Huiyan appeared in the hutong, it would be better to have the subtitle of "2017 Beijing" on it. "In the play, time information is given through props, including mobile phones, autopsy reports, and markings on the car, but it is indeed not as clear as the subtitles." Both directors said they humbly accepted all the questions and opinions raised by the audience. "The fact that I can think of these questions shows that it is a very professional audience, and their opinions are very valuable and worth learning and thinking about."

Duan Yihong has two identities in "Double Detective", one of the male protagonists, Li Huiyan, and the supervising producer of the play. Fei Yuzhu and Chen Zhufei are both newcomer directors, so Duan Yihong's role as a supervising producer in the cast building, style and artistic control of the play is particularly important. The two directors invariably described Duan Yihong as the general existence of "Double Detective" "Fixing the Needle of the Sea God". Fei Yuzhu said: "Because what we want to do is an adventure, an attempt. Creators often involuntarily look for their own safe zone during the creative process. Especially under the harsh shooting conditions, it is inevitable that some people will be afraid of their hands and feet and do not want to go out of the safe zone. Fei Yuzhu was a little worried before filming that Duan Yihong, who was a producer for the first time, would not be able to switch between the two identities of actor and producer.
