Recently, there has been a sharp increase in the number of news of the Chinese Navy donating or transferring combat ships at low prices, including the donation of a 053H2 (Jianghu III) frigate, the former "Cangzhou" frigate, to Sri Lanka in the name of military assistance, and a 053H2G (Jiangwei I) frigate, the former "Tongling" frigate, to Cambodia in the same way. It is not surprising that these warships have been in service for more than 25 years, but it is a bit surprising that 2 of the 053H3 (Jiangwei II) frigates that were commissioned around 2000 were to be transferred to the Bangladesh Navy.

The picture shows the frigate 542 "Tongling" that was dismantled and refurbished in the shipyard.
Just a decade ago, these frigates, known by NATO as "Jianghu" and "Jiangwei", were the absolute main force of the Chinese Navy's "coastal defense" mission. In the blink of an eye, these veterans were either all assigned to the "Nansha Patrol Ship Brigade," "Dalian Naval Academy," "Naval Test Base," and other units for retirement, or they were transferred to maritime law enforcement units to run errands and exert their residual heat, and the entire batch of exports abroad was everywhere, and the gap was indeed difficult for military fans at home and abroad to adapt.
Of course, the reason for this series of phenomena is the same, that is, the Chinese Navy's large-scale service of the 054/056 two types of frigates can perfectly replace a series of complex models of the previous generation of ships down to 037IS submarine hunting, up to 053H3 frigates, performance aside, personnel training and equipment maintenance can unify standards, it is already a leap forward.
The picture shows the 054 series frigates docked side by side. The ship greatly extended the boundaries of the Chinese Navy's combat area.
Secondly, after expanding the combat sea area through as many as 30 more than 30 054 series frigates, the range and seaworthiness of the 053 series frigates are no longer enough to meet the operational needs of the "blue water" (near ocean and ocean) area, and in the offshore area, compared with the 056 frigates, the tonnage of the 053 series is obviously too large, and the function mainly emphasizes the anti-ship weapon system and the most important submarine search and submarine task in the coastal sea.
So far, the 053 series frigates have become the "chicken ribs" in the Chinese naval combat system, which is really "tasteless and a pity to abandon".
Pictured here is the British Navy Type 42 destroyer being dismantled. The harmless disposal of military ships is far more cumbersome than that of civilian ships.
Looking at the whereabouts of these backward ships, we can find an interesting fact: of the more than ten 053 frigates that have been "processed", only 2 ships have been confirmed to be dismantled.
With the fall in steel prices again, and the completion of the upgrading of China's shipbuilding industry, the dismantling and recycling of scrap metal for shipyards is no longer a lucrative food that can make money, but a time-consuming and laborious burden, and the "pomp" of shipyards on the southeast coast after the collapse of the Soviet Union has flocked to buy old Red Navy ships and dismantle them.
Therefore, instead of posting money to let the shipyard dismantle these frigates, it is better to use them as target ships or give them to small countries, at least to save this unjust money.
The picture shows the "Charlie Adams" class destroyer that was sunk as a target ship.
Of course, this batch of 053 series frigates is nothing more than an "equipment upgrade" for small countries in Southeast Asia. The cambodian navy's core equipment before this was 15 fast patrol boats purchased from China, without which the Cambodian navy would not even be able to deal with smugglers and pirates. The entry into service of the 053 late-stage frigate has made Cambodia have a certain strength to fight against vietnam, the old enemy in the east, and at least achieve "reciprocity" in the performance of the flagship.
The picture shows the corvette "Struggle", which was previously exported to Bangladesh, which is an improved version based on the 056.
In addition, Bangladesh, which is slightly better economically, looks at the Type 053H3 frigate, which optimizes anti-submarine performance, and is willing to pay for it, which is actually expected. After India, Myanmar and even Pakistan have successively strengthened their submarine combat capabilities, Bangladesh, as a "gap" with the above-mentioned countries, naturally can only respond to it by catching up with armaments. However, after a while, the 053 frigate actually destroyed most of Southeast Asia (Thailand, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Myanmar), which is also an unexpected surprise for most military fans.
