2020 Graduate School of English Grammar: Learning to recognize six types of subordinate clauses

In our reading, we can often see the figure of the subordinate clause, but a wide variety of subordinate clauses often plague the candidates, so that the examinees are stupid and cannot distinguish which type of subordinate clauses the subordinate clauses in their eyes belong to, and the following is a simple analysis of the subordinate clauses, hoping to help the students' Examination english review.

► Clause type

In English, there are six categories of commonly used clauses:

1. Subject clause: A sentence acts as a component of the subject throughout the sentence, and the sentence is called the subject clause.

2. Object clause: A sentence acts as an object component in the entire sentence, which is called an object clause.

3. Predicate clause: A sentence acts as a predicate component of the entire sentence, which is called a predicate clause.

4. Determinatory clause: A sentence acts as an integral part of the definite clause throughout the sentence, and the sentence is called a definite clause.

5. Adverbial clause: A sentence acts as an adjective component in the entire sentence, and the sentence is called an adverbial clause.

6. Isotopic subordinate clause: A sentence acts as an allophone component in the entire sentence, which is called an isotopic subordinate clause.

► Identification of clauses

If they want to identify clause types, students should have an idea of the basic form of clauses. Regardless of the clause type, the "sentence" that acts as a component in the sentence should have the following characteristics:

Subordinate clause = subordinate conjunction + sentence

Now that you understand the basic structure of a clause, how do you identify the type of clause? Students can identify them in sentences by simple formulas. There are four common types of clause occurrences:

1. Noun + dependent conjunction + sentence = definite clause / isotopic clause

2. Verb + dependent conjunction + sentence = object clause/ predicate clause

3. × + subordinate conjunctions + sentence = adverbial subordinate clause

4. Dependent conjunction + sentence + verb = subject clause

For the above four types of subordinate clause occurrence forms have a certain understanding, then today first look at the first type of subordinate clause occurrence form identification methods and precautions!

例子1:Yet, being friendly is a virtue that many Americans value highly and expect from both neighbors and strangers. (1997年Text2)

Clause type: Definite clause

Identification: a virtue +that+many Americans value highly and expect from both neighbors and strangers

However, showing friendship is a virtue that Americans highly value and expect from both neighbors and strangers.

例子2:One such cause now seeks to end biomedical research because of the theory that animals have rights ruling out their use in research.

Clause type: Isotopic clause

Identification: theory + that + animals have rights ruling out their use in research

One such cause is now seeking to end biomedical research, because there is a theory that animals have the right to prohibit them from being used for experiments.

◆ Distinction between deterministic clauses and allophone clauses: Since the deterministic clause and the allophone clause are both "noun + dependent conjunction + sentence" in the form of identification, how should we specifically distinguish between the definite clause and the allophone clause? At this time, the focus is on whether the component is missing from the clause: if the component is missing from the clause, then it should be the definite clause; If there is no missing component in the clause, it is an allophone clause. In Example 1, the verbs value and exit in the clause are conjunction verbs that lack objects, so that the that-guided clause should belong to the definite clause. In Example 2, there is no element missing from the clause, so the that-guided clause should belong to the allophone clause.

例子3:I think that the kinds of things that women are exposed to tend to be in more of a chronic or repeated nature. (2008年Text1)

Clause type: Object clause

辨别方式:think(动词)+从属连词(that)+the kinds of things that women are exposed to tend to be in more of a chronic or repeated nature(句子)

Translation: I think the kind of things that women face tend to be more protracted and repetitive.

例子4:A report consistently brought back by visitors to the US is how friendly, courteous, and helpful most Americans were to them.

Discrimination: is (verb) + how (dependent conjunction) + (how) friendly, courteous, and helpful most Americans were to them (sentences)

One report that tourists to the United States keep bringing is how friendly, polite, and warm-hearted most Americans are to them.

◆ Distinction between object clauses and predicate clauses: Since object clauses and predicate clauses are both "verbs + subordinate conjunctions + sentences" in form, how to distinguish them? The hallmark that distinguishes the object clause from the predicate clause is whether the verb before the clause belongs to the verb: if it is a verb, then the clause is a predicate clause; If it is not a verb, then the clause is an object clause. Systemic verbs include: seem, appear, look, feel, smell, sound, taste, keep, remain, stay, become, go, turn, come, run, get, fall, grow, prove, turn out). However, in the process of reading, even if students do not know what the verbs are, it does not affect comprehension, so for the memory of the verbs, students do not need to consciously remember.
