The story told in "Ship Continues" is set on the eve of the outbreak of the First World War, when a group of European aristocrats and artists embark on a voyage to escort the ashes of a recently deceased famous opera actress back to the island where she was born; unexpectedly, a large war broke out on the way, and a group of refugees poured into the ship, forming a sharp class contrast in the enclosed space. Fellini, who worked as a journalist in his early years, became Freddie in the film. Jones plays an enthusiastic journalist who introduces the audience to the various forms of life on the ship, including some sharp observations of human nature, exposing the hypocritical face of the artist. The film won best picture and best screenplay at the 28th Italian David Awards.
Watching a Movie once described it as a film that combines yellow tabloids, satirical cartoons, and opera techniques to discuss the nature of cinema and bury idealism. At the same time, he said that there are many scattered and unclassified details in the film, which are unique to Fellini's films. Fellini glues together so many unrelated themes in the film, previously unseen dramatic structures, that not only are they not obtrusive, but even abnormal. The director always puts the film in a state of sadness and joy, breaking the narrative structure of conventional films several times, and breaking the audience's viewing emotions again and again. The "pseudo-documentary" approach at the beginning and end makes the whole film less like a pure feature film, while also maximizing the comedic effect of the whole film.
Fellini said: "The Ship Continues" is a film that has a lot to do with the opera, and if it had been in the early days, I would not have made such a thing. It was only later that I gradually had the means to appreciate our Italian opera tradition. ...... In my life, I have naturally rebelled against what everyone likes, wants, or "should" do. The deck of the ship used in the film is set up in the fifth shed of The Film City, which is supported by a water-pressed crane and creates a real sense of shaking. Everyone but me was seasick. The reason is not that I have more experience on the boat, but that I am too focused on filming, so I don't feel the boat rocking.
