The fourteenth issue of the cute pet star - flower tail hazel chicken

Hello everyone! I have a particularly "domineering" and very stylish name called Wyvern. Many people in Hulunbuir are familiar with me! Here, I would like to introduce myself in a solemn way.
My Chinese scientific name is Flower Tail Hazel Chicken, commonly known as "Flying Dragon". I belong to the suborder Chicken, Grouse family, hazelnut genus.

I inhabit coniferous forests such as pine, spruce, and fir trees with lush vegetation under the forest and abundant berries. It is distributed in the Xinlin, Ituri River, Daheigou, Honghuaerji and Genhe in the Daxing'an Mountains. It belongs to the national second-level protected animal.

When it comes to food, I am an unabashed "gastronomicist" person, and I love to eat a lot of things ~ especially pine nuts, hazelnuts, acorns, etc., and the buds, tender tips, and inflorescences of willows and birch trees, as well as the fruits and seeds of various vines and herbs, such as bilberry, goat's milk, thick plum, etc. As well as black bean trees, wild cherries, wild roses, tooth bumps, strawberries, etc. are all favorite foods.

Speaking of my physical appearance, I belong to the walking bird, with a strong body, short beak, and conical shape, suitable for pecking at plant seeds; short and rounded wings, not good at flying; strong feet, sharp claws, good at walking and digging for food; nostrils and feet have feathers to adapt to the cold.
The male has a short crown of feathers on the head; the upper body is mostly brownish gray with chestnut-brown transverse spots; the chin and throat are black, the lower body is dark brown and white; the lateral tail feathers are flower-like and have a broad black-brown secondary spot. The female is slightly the same, but the chin and throat are mostly brownish-white.
The female is similar to the male, but the upper body is brownish yellow, because the gray of the male's body feathers is replaced by brownish yellow; the chestnut brown fine transverse spots on the back become thicker, and the black spots from the lower back are almost covered; the chin is yellowish white; the throat is yellow with black feathers, and the white longitudinal band around the throat is not significant, and it is interrupted behind the eyes; and the forehead is not white.
The chicks have a reddish brown upperpart, with a chestnut-black longitudinal band in the center of the forehead extending to the top of the head, a chestnut-black longitudinal band on the side of the neck that is more pronounced; the dorsal feathers have white plumage and pinnatal spots mixed with chestnut brown; the shoulder feathers are the same color as the back, but with inconspicuous pale brown transverse spots, and the outer edges and ends are dotted with black brown; and the flight feathers are dark brown, and their outer feathers have a series of brown spots. The tail is only 20 mm long and is greyish brown with dark brown spots. The underparts are nearly white , and the thorax and flanks are mixed with black-brown spots. Mouth and feet yellow. Young birds after July have plumage similar colours to female adult birds.

We flying dragon birds can be united, and when we go out for a walk, we are all in groups of ~~
Flower-tailed hazelnuts are forest-dwelling birds, not in groups during the breeding season, and in other seasons, they are mostly active in small groups, with 3-4 or 6-7 in groups, and there are also more than 10. Foraging activities usually begin at dawn. During the food hunt, the hazel flocks disperse, each looking for food, maintaining a certain distance from each other, and from time to time making a "gi-gi-gi" call to connect with each other. Usually mostly hidden between the branches of pine trees, sometimes people walk nearby, still do not move: walk slowly between the bushes under the forest, can run quickly when frightened, run a few steps and then take off, sometimes take off directly, fly when the wings are very loud, fly quickly, generally fly 2-3 meters that is, fall on the low branches of the tree, and take off again when people approach. In case of alarm, it is often close to the branch or hidden in the branch.
In the winter, after the snow is covered, there is more time to be active in the trees, but instead of perching on the trees, I spend the night in the snow nest on the ground. The duration of the daily activity is closely related to the length of sunrise and sunset times.

For how to continue the next generation, here I want to solemnly say, cough cough cough
The flower-tailed hazelnut chicken is mainly a single formulation of one male and one female, but there is also a tendency to multi-preparation. It is very insidious during the breeding season, with very little activity, and estrus mating in late April or May. During the breeding season, the posture of estrus is similar to that of other birds in the grouse family, the male has a fan-like tail, two wings drooping, the crown of the feathers is raised, and the wings are constantly moving when running on the ground, often drawing the ground into shallow grooves. Estrus begins quietly, and after the nest area is basically occupied, there are often fights between the males to prevent other males from entering their nest areas. The female does not participate in the fight, and she is free to find food in either nest area. When in heat, the male and female birds are inseparable, chirping and calling to each other. At this time, the female bird is more alert; if there is a slight noise, it will fly away alone, and then reunite with each other after being quiet, usually the male bird flies to the female bird.

Due to its lack of resistance and combat effectiveness, the Wyvern Bird has become the prey of many predators, and my natural enemies include sables, long-tailed forest owls, green ferrets, golden eagles, sparrowhawks, lynxes, foxes and so on.
Since I don't have any fighting power, I hope that everyone will look at me from a distance, don't think of me as your food, and hope that human beings can live in peace with us.
